Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hmm, thats suspicious, b-coz I have BFS as well, we need to reproduce this with vanilla kernel... I'll do it later today, maybe it's not the catalyst but BFS which is triggering the bug.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I don't have/use bfs so doubt that's the problem. Also, i did removed /etc/ati dir before i installed 11-9 , i still got segfaults sad

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,

since last update my Kwin with desktop effects crashes too and bring me back constantly to KDM login screen.
To get rid of that, I logged in using KDE debug mode session (I think it's called safe mode or something like that) and switch my decoration to "oxygen" theme.
I logged back to my normal KDE session and it works without crashes.
If I switch again to a theme downloaded from internet then it crash again bringing me back to KDM login screen.

Regards.

@beber75
I use bespin, haven't tried with default oxygen. I can reproduce the crash every time if i select my second screen (HMDI connected)  to be anything other than clone of my first display.

same here. Maybe it's caused by fixed rainbow bar smile
Politics of compositing in KDE and GNOME3 is different - ie. in GNOME3 you can not switch between compositing and non-compositing desktop in one session, you have to log out...

i noticed atomic bug in 11.8, but it was not causing any problems (and maybe actually it's not causing problems in 11.9).

Anyhow: i'm seriously thinking about moving [catalyst-11.8] repo into main [catalyst] repo, and so  present [catalyst] repo with 11.9 inside into [catalyst-11.9] repo. I don't think that fixed rainbow bar is worth all this suffering.
Well - maybe i should downgrade also an AUR. What do you think?

Edit: oh LOL, another bug - X is crashing whenever i will maximize konsole... sweet! tongue

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have tested with vanilla as well, the same bug.
I have tested with X 1.10.3 and 1.10.4, the same. Darn, hopefully they'll do smth fast about it, like release a quick bug-fix release or so.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Tried 11.9 with xserver from <xorg19> repo, and i didn't have any crashes so far - tried pugging it/out the hdmi cable, turning compositing on/off, tried changing  KWin effects, etc. and not a sigle crash, but (yeah) the performance is absolutely terrible

Everyone who have problems with drivers please report to http://www.amd.com/us/LinuxCrewSurvey and make ticket on http://ati.cchtml.com/. Number of reports make sense.

I'm experiencing X crashes in KDE (compositing enabled) in seemingly random instances, though I have experienced on after changing virtual desktops.

When I read your post I tried maximizing konsole and.....crash! Time to downgrade to 11.8.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I think this is the best place to ask this (instead of making a thread): I'm buying a new computer and it will have definetely a AMD Fusion CPU A6-3650 (don't ask if I can change the CPU, I can't, lomg story).
Anyone uses Fusion CPUs? I'm guessing that catalyst would have all the support of it, but xf86-video-ati probably not. I haven't found anything relating this model, but AFAIK everything sould work fine.
Oh also, does KDE still have problem with catalyst or is it all gone now?

Arch x86_64 ATI AMD APU KDE frameworks 5

Whatever I do, I always end up with something horribly mis-configured.

I recently got myself a "Lenovo ThinkPad X121e (AMDFusion E-350)". Works fine with catalyst 11.8 and KDE 4.7.

I'm using ATI HD 4890 and my KDE got a random garbage screen. I'm using catalyst total 11.8 and KDE 4.7.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi everyone, I've install Arch on my lenove z475 with AMD Radeon HD 6470M and HD 6520G, and I'v tried with xf86-video-ati and it seems that I have to add "radeon.modeset=0", then finally got only a "fallback" model with poor screen resolution...

Then I tried "catalyst-generator 11.8-1" and followed the great wiki, but the topbar won't display...

So, my problems are:
First, is there anyway I could do to let the topbar appear normally?
Second, what's the difference between "catalyst-total catalyst-generator catalyst-hook catalyst-daemon"? and how do you guys install your driver?

I don't know about the topbar, but concerning the different packages:

To install AMD's fglrx driver for the linux package, you need to install either catalyst (driver for stock kernel) + catalyst-utils (required libraries/utilities) packages or catalyst-total package.
[...]
Please note that there are some additional packages which can be usefull, every one of them can replace catalyst package and provide fglrx modules for multiple kernels installed on your system, these packages are:

- catalyst-generator - able to generate fglrx modules packed into pacman's packages - most secure and KISS-compatible package in this side-note, althought it has to be operated manually;

- catalyst-hook - mkinitcpio' hook which will automatically update fglrx modules with every kernel's update;

- catalyst-daemon - that delivers 'automatic update of fglrx modules with every kernel's update' functionality done by init script.

Source: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst

If you're using a stock kernel the catalyst + catalyst-utils package should do the trick for you.

I Installed my driver the following way: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … repository .

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi I'm using 11.9 with no issues.

But I want to say --- talking all those here is messy, you see?  We've got such a long thread already, which is difficult to find out useful information inside.  Why don't we setup a mailing list?  At least Google Groups can do.
