Various troubles with my portable USB Arch install

Ok, I have had my portable Arch USB for about 6 months now and generally it has been working ok.  There are some small problems that are driving me up the wall though.

My main problem has been the "universal capability" with getting it to at least have a useful x.org session on whatever machine I run it on.

For example, despite the fact it loaded the Intel graphics module on a laptop, it tries to use VESA instead and then just gets a blank screen.  Is there a way to give preference to this for x.org?  (I'm ignoring the fact it has that common i915 issue with blank screen on startup and such)

Normally network/disk has not given me any hassle.  I just want a usable x.org on whatever machine I try to load this on.  If I were to use say the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS livecd it seems to be happy with video on any machine I use it on.  How does it accomplish this?  What am I missing?
