(SOLVED) No DE after install

HI all,

I just decided to give Arch a try after jumping from distro to distro in search of something that would work for me best.  I followed the beginners guide install wiki during the process, and after installing the WM (Compiz)  and the DE (e17) and the DM (kdm) when I enter "startx" it takes me to the "test" startx screen with the 4 generic windows that I saw after the "Testing X" section of the wiki.  Can anyone tell me what I may have done wrong, or am stupidly missing? Please?  Thanks!

Have you edited your .xinitrc file?

Re: (SOLVED) No DE after install

If you've already installed KDM, then run it (choosing a preferred method: Display Manager). Of course, you can still use startx to run your WM (this requires .xinitrc file in your home directory; otherwise you'll end up launching xterms x 3 + xclock). Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

Re: (SOLVED) No DE after install

I installed KDM and when the desktop didn't load the first time I thought that maybe it wasn't going to work with E17, so I installed xdm, but either way, you when I run startx, it takes me to the xterms x 3 + xclock (at least I think this is the test environment from the setup).  How exactly do I get to edit my .xinitric file, or find out if it is in my home directory?  I went for arch because I wanted to learn this stuff, but at the "end" I find myself being rather helpless! Thanks for the knowledge, in advance!

ls -A

This will show you your "dot" files, .xinitrc being one of them.  If you see it, edit it with your text editor of choice (nano, vim, leafpad, etc), using the wiki for guidance:

Re: (SOLVED) No DE after install

Okay, it's not there, I get:
.bash_history  .dbus  .esd_auth  .gconf  .gconfd .kde4  .pulse  .pulse-cookie  .Xauthority  xorg.conf.new

What up with that?

Re: (SOLVED) No DE after install

Victory!  I think... I typed cd /home and after that typed kdm and voila!  I figured it was something dumb.  Although, I did get a couple of warnings, and errors, but I seem to have a functioning KDE desktop with the one application I added long ago (firefox).  Sweet.  Now I have to figure the rest of it out!  Thanks for the quick replies, you guys are great.

Re: (SOLVED) No DE after install

why don't you add kdm to daemons list in /etc/rc.conf? it will take you automatically to graphical login manager, and X.
