Gnome 3.2 not working

Hi everyone,

Having read the news on Gnome 3.2's availability in extra, I fired up pacman and anxiously waited for the upgrade. Unfortunately, something seems to have gone wrong as now Gnome won't start.

If I boot from runlevel 5, the screen stops at showing the default GDM background you see when logging in. I then tried to boot from runlevel 3, trying to start Gnome using startx so I can skip GDM. The result is the same: the screen stops at showing the default background. There's a small difference, in that some of my startup programs seem to run (I use redshift, a tool to adjust screen brightness, and I can see the brightness changing as X starts).

I've tried moving away .config/dconf and .gconf in runlevel 3, only to see the same result. When I checked the terminal messages after running startx, a bunch of error messages showed up. I don't remember all, but there were some mentions of JS error.

So what should I do now to get Gnome 3.2 working? How do I capture the error messages shown when I run startx, if somehow that's required for troubleshooting?

EDIT: typos

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

Same problem here.
I did see a warning during upgrade, saying there was a mismatch between a folder permission and the package permission. I tried:

# chmod a+r -R /usr/can't/remember/exactly/

without success. I'll reboot to send my logs.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

paste /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log and  /var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log while gdm is running

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

@wonder: I installed but nothing changed.

Also, I deleted the folder where the permissions warning was happening and reinstalled gdm, gnome-session, gnome-desktop and gnome-shell (just to be sure).
Didn't resolve either, but the permission warning stopped.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

@splatterdash your problem is not related to gdm but to folks, telepathy-glib. are you fully up to date ? be sure you are not using some builds from aur that replaced them

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

@wonder: everything back to work, thanks! big_smile

I deleted (again) /var/lib/gdm/.conf, ~/.config/dconf and ~/.gconf. Unfortunately (and as predictable) I lost all my settings.
I'm not praising anything here, but it is funny how people criticized gnome 3 because it lacks customization features and now, thanks to this, I took only 3 minutes to put everything back in place.

This incident has been reported.

@leovailati delete  /var/lib/gdm/.conf

@wonder do you mean to say delete /var/lib/gdm/.config/dconf?  Which step is right, do a chmod for the difference in permissions or as you said just delete it?

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

I finally have control of the login/gdm problem after clearing /var/lib/gdm/.config/dconf. The goal is to undo the customization to gdm. I get the point.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

EDIT: FIXED I reinstalled cobl and it seemed to work. Hope this helps anyone else having issues!

Gnome 3.2 is not working for me either, I always get the Oh No! Something has gone wrong. screen. I tried all the methods in this post to fix it, but nothing has worked.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

wonder: I'm not using any AUR packages and both folks and telepathy-glib are new. I tried reinstalling them to no avail.

I've tried rebooting several times, but curiously, after this error started happening, I've seen 3x error during boot that says something is wrong with my dbus. Rebooting again fixes that, and the error show up randomly. Maybe something's wrong with my dbus? But then again, the dbus is also the newest and I didn't install anything from AUR to replace it hmm.

Any ideas on what to try next?

On the news page, I noticed that the following was noted:

If you have problems login into the session, try resetting your settings by moving away ~/.config/dconf and ~/.gconf.

So, I backed up my settings, moved them, then ran rc.d start gdm(I had stopped it previously before) and viola~ everything was fine! Just note that all of your settings will be gone.

If it's useful, here's my .xsession-errors log. It looks like there's a bunch of other errors there, but I don't know where to start fixing.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

@splatterdash have you tried to remove all gnome-shell extensions first?

i also see some gconf errors, did you replaced gconf with one from aur?

do pacman -Qm

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

wonder: I didn't remove all my gnome-shell-extension prior to this, but after doing so (and removing /var/lib/gdm/.config, ~/.gconf, and ~/.config/dconf, then reinstalling gnome and gdm), the error still remains.

I didn't replace gconf with one from AUR and here's my pacman -Qm:

EDIT: I tried reverting telepathy-glib to 0.15.4 (from cache) just to see how it goes, and now Gnome starts but only in fallback mode. Here's the X log for the session:

EDIT2: I found the offending extension that generated the JS errors. Turns out it's a manually installed extension that hides the taskbar icons. Unfortunately, after removing them I still got the telepathy errors (and it seems that there are several gnome-settings-daemon errors too) sad. Here's the X log for my last session:

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

The problem is:
I dont know why when we upgrade to gnome 3.2 for some reason the package cogl from the clutter project was uninstalled.
The only thing you have to do its:
>>>>>  " $sudo pacman -S cogl "

Thats what i did and problem solved!

Edit:
To do that you have to press ctrl+alt+f2 to enter to a tty.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

Hello,
I've got the same issues.
I tried to remove the /var/lib/gdm/.config/  ~/.config/dconf and ~/.gconf
but I don't have any /var/lib/gdm/.conf
I firstly had the same warnings ad by removing the /var/log/gdm/.config I managed to reinstall gdm without warning.
But It still doesn't work. When I turn on the PC, I've got the screen of gdm, but nothing to log in and it stays like that.
Note : If I rapidly log in with the console and then ctrl+alt+F7 to see what's hapening I have the "frame" to log in but when I put my password it freezes.
Please help me I'm lost.

Re: Gnome 3.2 not working

mu24r: my cogl was not uninstalled by Gnome3.2, actually. Even after I tried reinstalling, the problem remains sad.

Anyone else running into the same issue? Now I got a bunch of GDBus errors in the X log.
