Hi all,
I have heard many good things about using MPD and I'm sure I'd love it...if I could get it to start. I followed the install instructions from the MPD wiki and some of the troubleshooting steps listed on the Arch Wiki, nor do any threads I find in the forums alleviate my problem.
I have added mpd to my daemons array after network and after alsa and even after logging in (I am using XFCE, if that matters), I am unable to start it from terminal as root (/etc/rc.d/mpd start).
Please let me know any files you may need to see to help me troubleshoot - thank you in advance for any help!
Cheers,
Czar.

Any erros in the console when you try to start it up? Check you bootlog too.
What version of mpd are you using - from the repos, from AUR or ...?

Hi Karol,
Apologies for the delayed response as you were quick with some help for me. I installed MPD from the repo (pacman -S mpd), which is 0.16.4-1.
When checking the bootlog, I do not see any entries or notations of mpd even though it is in my daemons array in /etc/rc.conf. If I go to the terminal and enter
/etc/rc.d/mpd start
it results in [FAIL].
Again, thank you for the help.
Cheers,
Czar.

naaaah... thats not how to find out... start mpd by running "/usr/bin/mpd" as root"
dont start the rc.d script

Cannot reproduce, it start OK for me. All I did was
pacman -S mpd
sudo cp /usr/share/mpd/mpd.conf.example /etc/mpd.conf
as per the install note:
==> Create a configuration file /etc/mpd.conf before using MPD (example: /usr/share/mpd/mpd.conf.example)
I get a [FAIL] w/o the config file though.

Okay, you may be on to something here. I had configured all my options in /etc/mpd.conf. I will have to go to the wiki again to see where the other config file is at. Do I still start it through the DAEMONS array?
Cheers,
Czar.

@Rasi
[root@black ~]# /usr/bin/mpd
Failed to bind to '[::]:6600': Failed to create socket: Address family not supported by protocol
But I haven't edited the configs, so it may be just misconfiguration on my part.
mpd starts up - I can see it the process running.

Hi Karol,
I did this initially and it has not worked for me yet. I was working on what Rasi showed me and it was pulling options (playlists, etc) from somewhere else, so I am looking for where that is now. Hopefully I will get this working soon...it's getting boring with no music.
Cheers,
Czar.

Not sure if I get it, but
[karol@black ~]$ ps -C mpd -o args=
/usr/bin/mpd /etc/mpd.conf
shows mine is using the /etc/mpd.conf config.

in the wiki you will find a little script created by me, to take away the hassle to configure mpd.
only one difference to "normal" way. mpd has to be started by user instead by daemon script. try this one.

extract it, run it. done

@Rasi
Should I create entries in /etc/hosts.allow for you?
hosts.allow is deprecated ;P

Karol, Rasi,
Thanks so much for your help. I still haven't figured out what the problem and have been unsuccessful so far in getting the daemon to run properly. I am preparing to travel, so for the time being, I am abandoning the effort to get mpd working and will have to work on it when I get back. Time to use a "regular" install-and-use program to handle my music until I have the time to sit and play for a bit.
I didn't want you guys thinking I took a solution and ran without giving proper credit.
Again - thanks for your help in helping me troubleshoot this.
Cheers,
Czar.

May your travels enlighten you so you can find a way to the Holy Grail working mpd. Have fun :-)
