i had a great idea for a live cd, or a "flavor" of archie. the live cd would use e17 instead of kde, so people can try arch and e17 (hence the name arche17) at the sametime. i'm still trying to figure out how to go about doing this. it will be x86 only. anyone wanna help?

great idea. I would really like to try out e17. A live-cd is probably the best way to try it out, at least for the first look. I don't really know anything about making live-cds but I'm willing to learn so if you need help, I could spend a little bit of my precious precious time.

Archie uses xfce4. I think there will be a KDE version in the future. There some info in this forum about custom iso. Maybe you could use the archie build tools/scripts. Try posting/searching in the archie forum: http://user-contributions.org/forums/us … x.php?f=17

I´ve been planing exactly this, and than i read this topic. funny
Creating such a live-cd wouldn´t be very hard. I think we´ve just have to figure out which packages we wanna have inside the live-cd. And than anyone (maybe me) have to install a new Arch with this packages somewhere on his HD and just run the archie-scripts at the end.
So let´s start a new topic to discuss which packages should be included.

I´m thinking about the same live-cd with some nice fvwm-themes from here, because in my eyes fvwm is the greatest ever. Although it´s much harder to get it look beautiful than e17.

i already have a base arch system setup. i was planning on using the packages in rensel's repo http://ftp.surfnet.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/ … ur/rensel/

Maybe you could add xine-ui, gimp, inkscape. I don't know how much space is availiable because you have openoffice which is quite big. If you want, you can compare your list with the Archie list to check if you didn't forgot anything.

Well, there's plenty of space on archie, so far its about 300mb. Uncompressed and installed, that 300mb becomes a whopping 1gb.

z4ziggy though, says that it becomes substantially slower the more you install to the liveCD.

I might drop OO and use abiword or something.

Snowman: i'll add xine-ui, i also think there is a e17 player that uses emotion (which uses xine-lib) i'll look for a package for that. Gimp and inkscape i'll see what i can do.

I think another problem with having a big root (other than that it becomes slower) is that i don't think people will like downloading a huge a$$ cd. Like i think one of reasons that archie is successful is because of the size of the cd. 340mb isn't a bad download, i think its also something a dialup user could handle. one thing i personally hate is waiting for a 700mb iso to download. so i'll see what happens after i fix the test iso (silly me forgot to install a kernel d;-})

It still wants some information. I'm not really sure it should be a part of the Arch64 site, but as one of syamajala's projects that's a good location for it for now. Knowing syamajala, this project is partially an experiment in creating live CDs so that he can figure out how to make an Arch64 live CD. ;-)
