ASUS U56E-BBL5 laptop does everything well under Arch Linux except to connect via wireless:
1) Password and other setup has been verified to be correct via secondary WiFI (Netgear WG111v3 Wireless USB Adapter)
2) However, when built-in WiFI tries to connect it gets to "Validating authentication..." (iwcd-gui) and times out
3) The AP and all neighboring AP connections (in other parts of office building) show up in GUI -- i.e. it's able to communicate with an AP enough to get SSID and other info
4) Tried switching the host AP from WPA2 (AES) to WPA1/2 (AES and TKIP)

Tried NetworkManager in place of wicd (then returned to wicd). Have rebuilt wpa_supplicant (ABS) to update it as much as possible (then removed and put stock, vanilla package back due to lack of improvement). All packages are up to date (as up-to-date as one can get from a mirror) including kernel 3.0. Am using x86_64 based repos.
Any suggestions?

You might go into the Wicd GUI and turn on debug mode, then check the logs in /var/log/wicd/ to see if that provides any clue.

I'm having the exact same issue, here is a log from wicd http://pastebin.com/AhZPsJeG
