I'm struggling to get arch (and other distros) to install on a 2006-vintage HP laptop. My arch install disk from 2010 fails (this disk has successfully installed several other machines), in desperation I even downloaded ubuntu but no luck. However puppy live CDs work well as does an old coverdisk with slitaz.
I know that the machine is fine since it runs windows XP (or did until I wiped it over the weekend).
I note that arch requires certain minimum chip architectures, but I have no idea how to check for the validity of the chipset against arch's requirements. Can anyone give me a clue as to whether my 'turion 64' is the problem or if I should look for some other cause.
Many thanks,
R.

Your AMD Turion 64 processor should be Arch compatible.
How did the install disk fail?
You could try one of these images instead: http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/2011.08.15/

Obviously I couldn't cut and paste at the time, and I did not write it down. I t appears to have problems reading /dev/sr0 - which made little sense since I think that is the CD drive and this happenned quite late in the installation. I'll have another go over the weekend and make careful notes if that helps.
Thanks for the information.

To rule out a damaged cd-r or a faulty cd drive you should try installing from a USB key.

Wonderful! I think...
The USB install went flawlessly.
What I fail to understand is what went wrong with the original install? The CD drive works reliably under XP and boots live CDs properly; so I believe that the drive is ok. The CD used has installed other arch machines with no problems; so I believe that the CD is ok. So I'm confused.
However the original problem appears to be solved. Thanks for your help,
R.

Post the output of dmesg.
If the kernel doesn't like your cd drive it should show up.

I must apologise for the late reply, I was called away.
Regrettably, in the meantime the machine has suffered a motherboard failure and has been scrapped, so the issue is no more.
I am very grateful for the help that was offered.
