Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

I'm still relatively new to linux, and I just migrated over from ubuntu.  This is my first post in these forums, so please bear with me.

I've noticed that ever since doing a big "Syu" upgrade, my entire system freezes about ten or twenty seconds after i run rtorrent.  I still can't quite figure out what's at fault.  The logs all seem like gibberish to me and don't have any info for the precise times when the system freezes.  I'm researching how to do a rollback, but I can't figure out how to rollback the kernel to a previous version.  (I tried using the kernel-rollback in /boot, but encountered the same problem.)

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody has experienced this same problem with rtorrent?  Otherwise, is there somewhere else I could look for a solution?

Thanks all,

And special thanks to everyone on IRC who helped me out!

Re: Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

Using the latest kernel and rtorrent without any issues.

Do you get any errors during the freeze? If so, post them. Post your logs, just in case.

Re: Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

Thanks for the quick response smile

When it freezes, everything freezes.  the screen, the virtual monitors, everything; so i can't immediately check the logs.

The last freeze happened at 12:42 am (I even wrote it down to make sure) here are the relevant entries from /var/log/everything.log:

Jul 1 00:15:04 myhost kernel: atl1c 0000:09:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Up<100 Mbps Full Duplex>
Jul 1 00:15:04 myhost dhcpcd[3663]: eth0: carrier acquired
Jul 1 00:15:04 myhost dhcpcd[3663]: eth0: rebinding lease of 192.168.1.31
Jul 1 00:15:04 myhost dhcpcd[3663]: eth0: acknowledged 192.168.1.31 from 192.168.1.254
Jul 1 00:15:04 myhost dhcpcd[3663]: eth0: checking for 192.168.1.31
Jul 1 00:15:09 myhost dhcpcd[3663]: eth0: leased 192.168.1.31 for 3600 seconds
Jul 1 00:20:01 myhost crond[3448]: FILE /var/spool/cron/root USER root PID 3836 job sys-hourly
Jul 1 00:40:01 myhost -- MARK --
Jul 1 00:49:13 myhost syslog-ng[3348]: syslog-ng starting up; version='3.1.1'
Jul 1 00:49:13 myhost kernel: Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset
Jul 1 00:49:13 myhost kernel: Initializing cgroup subsys cpu

As I said in my first post, I'm still pretty new to this, so i don't even know what most of this stuff means.   ...or even if everything.log is where i should be looking.

Any ideas?

Re: Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

Do you have some big disc action going on in that time? If so, I guess rtorrent does a check on the files on every start. This happens if you don't close it properly.

Just guessing.

Also, make sure that you have "check_hash = no" in your .rtorrentrc, unless, for some reason, you want this feature turned on.

Re: Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

Well the problem has not reoccurred.  It can't be a coincidence that I also am no longer leeching.  I guess in the future I'll have to make sure I only leech a few things at a time.  Thanks for the help everyone.  Have a great 4th of July weekend.

Re: Is anyone else using rtorrent and the new Kernel?

smau [~] $ uname -a
Linux neplero 2.6.34-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jun 19 00:07:49 CEST 2010 x86_64 Genuine Intel(R) CPU U2300 @ 1.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

smau [~] $ rtorrent -h
Rakshasa's BitTorrent client version 0.8.6
....

that's me and never had any problem, the only freezes i have occur when rtorrent is checking torrent's hash, but these are not freezes, just high disk disk using and a bit of system slowing down
