pacman -S vlc shows me that it's total weigh including dependencies is 158.58 MB. Is there a way I can install vlc like I did in Ubuntu without installing qt designer? Thanks

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20896 - minimal, but still needs Qt4

I think OP was referring to Qt4.
Inxsible, have you tried any of the versions I posted above?

never mind then but I thought qt designer (which the op mentioned) was a different program

No I haven't actually. Vlc has been installed on my machine since so long, that i never bothered to look for alternatives. I always use the cvlc (cli util) and never the gui.
So you are right, maybe I should look into getting the vlc-nogui or simply get something else like mplayer.

what is the package name to get only the command line mplayer?
I think I might try out mplayer for a while and if I like it, i will switch to it from vlc.

What about the mplayer in extra?
I installed it, but I see no gui version. the man page says gmplayer is the gui version, but the download didn't bring in gmplayer...also invoking gmplayer doesn't do anything.
sorry for the off topic

thanks guys,
I'm trying to install vlc-mini using 'makepkg -s' and it is saying that "error: 'qt4': could not find or read package". I've searched it but there is no qt4 package in AUR. "pacman -S qt4" didn't help either. What can I do?
Offline
btw, what about SKYPE? can I install it without qt designer? thanks

Or just the mplayer from the repos... It comes with no gui. Anyway, Inxsible, stop hijacking the thread.
Back to the OP, I guess Qt Designer is packaged as part of our qt package aand we do not tend to split packages into small components like some other distros do. So if you want vlc, then you need qt which gives you...
For skype, there is a static qt version in the repos, but that is a waste of time unless you change from using vlc.

Are you sure you know what qt designer is? This is Sparta ... I mean: this is Arch and we may do things a bit differently than Ubuntu.
If you want sth - search for it. Check the wiki, AUR, forums.
There is qt package in the repo: 'pacman -S qt'.

Thanks for your answer. Then, can I get qt from other distros and use it or compile it myself so that I don't have to have qt designer?

Yeah, I guess this is Sparta. Qt and Qt4 are the same? I'm going to wiki for the answer ...

[karol@black ~]$ pacman -S qt
Targets (1): qt-4.6.3-1 [23,36 MB]
Looks like Qt 4.6 to me.

thanks for helping the newbie

Well, if I'm correct, installed Qt package is about 100Mb, and Qt Assistant, Designer & Linguist are no more than 3-4 Mb altogether. Now, I wouldn't exactly consider that as a waste of hard drive space, and it's not like they are some sort of background daemons that run all the time, eating CPU and memory resources.
If you like VLC, and think that it's the best player ,use it.
You may remove Qt tools shortcuts in menus if they make you so uncomfortable.

@ Xabre
Is the Qt Assistant, Designer & Linguist required for vlc or Skype?
Offline
They are not required, but they are far too small to be maintained as separate package(s), so they are installed as a part of Qt. Splitting one logical package into into many smaller packages, like Debian or Ubuntu does, simply goes against the Arch Way.
Offline
I wasn't going to argue what's Arch-like and what's not :-)
Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks, thats exactly what I'm gonna do. Didn't know Qt Assistant, Designer & Linguist were just under4 Mb.
