I mostly use Thunar-volman to automatically mount usb drives, and I have looked into udev as well. These work fine for mounting things without me doing anything, but I'm wondering the easiest way to unmount a usb drive. Right now I open Thunar and right click and unmount. Is there anything that sits in the system tray (notification area) and lets me unmount with just one click?
I realize that what I currently do is only 3 steps, but it seems like it should be less work.

You can do it by device:
# umount /dev/xxxx
or by mountpoint:
# umount /path/to/mountpoint
EDIT: You could possible add that as an XFCE launcher or something (I'm not very familier with XFCE to be honest )

I simply remove it...my udev rules cleanup the /media folders. Of course, I also make sure whatever was writing to it has finished beforehand.

is it a good idea to umount manually devices mounted by other software like thunar?

I do a sudo umount /path/to/mountpoint.
Unless I am shutting down the computer...in which case I let the shutdown routine handle it.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

The partedmagic livecd uses a nifty frontend to pmount called mount-gtk. http://mount-gtk.sourceforge.net/

well, I use gnome do with "docky" appearance, its a dock that if you right click on the usb or mounted unit, you get an option to unmount it, fastest way I have seen, and plus, gnome do its the best app ever in my opinion
hope it helps

Thanks Everyone. The Gnome Do aproach was most what I was looking for. Perhaps I don't need to unmount at all? That sounds a bit scary though.

If you are using gnome there is a utility that you can add to the panel to handle disks and removable media.
