Wireless not working after update

This may be self inflicted, I hope not. Looked for a resolution but drew a blank. I wasnt able to update my laptop for about two weeks because of work and the mirror situation. When I finally made myself sitdown and update I could not use a US mirror so I used a Canadian mirror. Since it update the kernel([2010-08-11 00:43] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.34.1-1 -> 2.6.34.2-2) I rebooted and noticed net-auto-wireless failed. I logged in and tried to start it manually but it failed. So I tried to connect back to my AP using netcfg as I always do and it failed w/ the following:  > WPA Authentication/Association Failed    [FAIL]. I am not sure what the issue is. The laptop is a DEll D610 with an ATheros AR5008 using the ath9k driver:

lsmod | grep ath9k

ath9k                  63750  0
ath9k_common            2093  1 ath9k

led_class               1835  1 ath9k

iwconfig wlan0

          Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
I also tried using WICD and Archassistant but to no avail. I am using the current kernel[2010-08-12 14:27] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.34.2-2 -> 2.6.34.3-1) it also updated dhcpcd[2010-08-11 00:40] upgraded dhcpcd (5.2.5-1 -> 5.2.7-1) dnsutils, and consolkit. These are the only packages that look like they could cause my issues.

All help would be appreciated. Any other info I left out plz ask!

Thanks in advance

PS-wired works fine, i am using it now.

Re: Wireless not working after update

I found some problem with my wireless usb dongle (ralink rt73) and kernel 2.6.34.x. I resolved by upgrading to kernel 2.6.35 from [testing] but also downgrade to 2.6.33 worked. I reported everything here:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=102540

Hope this could be useful...

Re: Wireless not working after update

Thanks for the reply snack!

Over the weekend I made a litle progress: I uncommented testing and updated w/ the latest kernel and now I am able to connect to my AP @ home after several tries where as before it always connected on the first try. At work it refuses to connect to that AP. Net-auto-wireless is still not working.

I do have a question, should I try going back to the kernel that I was on before my issues? I am kind of at a loss as what to do next.

Thanks again for all youre help!!

Re: Wireless not working after update

I would give a try with 2.6.33 kernel, so that you can be sure that it is a kernel issue. In my case, I don't know what happened with 2.6.34 but both 33 and 35 work for me.

Re: Wireless not working after update

I was not having any issues with kernel 2.6.34.1-1, should I expect any issues if I down grade to an earlier kernel. It would seem some packages may have issues with the earlier kernel.

This morning I could not log on to my AP using netcfg, I had to use Wicd to get it to connect. This is becoming very frustrating to say the least.

You said you tried with kernel from [testing], if it works I would stay with it without any downgrade. Soon it will hit the offical repo, so if it works there's imho no reason to blow it away.
If you are having problems with netcfg but not with wicd, I would say it is not a kernel issue...

Re: Wireless not working after update

Thanks again for ur reply snack!!

The new kernel hasnt fixed all the issues. I am still dealing w/ the following:

1. net-auto-wireless fails on boot and cannot be started manually.
2. Cannot connect to home or work AP's w/ netcfg
3. Wicd throws up an error "Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd error log for error messages". Have not found any relevant messages in the log yet, will keep looking. I can connect manually to the d-bus. On my home AP I have to try Wicd several times to get it to connect at work it keeps saying bad password which is not trueI can connect at work w/ my MS XP laptop using the same password)  I have to admit I am a little stumped, I do not believe it is a netcfg issue. Not sure which way to turn now.

Thanks again for your help!!

If anyone has any ideas or if you need more info please ask because I am stumped!

P.S. I looked for a ath9k or kernel bug but I did not find anything I thought was relevent.

3. Take a look at these threads:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=572717
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79129

Wicd has always worked flawlessly for me, if you can get it going I think your problem should be mostly solved...

Re: Wireless not working after update

Thanks jasonwryan for ur response, Wicd does not solve my issues. I got it to work but Saturday morning when I booted up my laptop the only way to get it to connect to my home AP was to reboot the ap. Wicd kept saying bad password, the same as it does at work.

So I fooled with it some more this weekend and have not made any progrees. From the lack of responses from others I can only assume this is not an easy fix. So do I need to file a bug report? If so with Arch, kernel or who?

If the community needs more info to help please just ask.

Thanks for ur help.

Re: Wireless not working after update

I have also been experiencing the same issue. The only way I can connect is by downgrading to 2.6.35.2 and using dhcpcd eth0. Wireless through netcfg always times out. I'm using a Samsung NC10 with the ath5k kernel module, if that helps.

Re: Wireless not working after update

Sorry to hear you are having issues also xelados. I have no solution yet, sorry. Right now I am working fifty hours a week, an hour travel time each way and my daughter lives with us and she just had twin boys so my time is limited unfortunately. Since know one has pointed me in any direction I am going to try to get wpa_supplicant working, then I will move on to netcfg and once I have it working I will try to get net-auto-wireless working. If I can be of assistance just let me know! Are you sure ath5k is the correct driver? I am using ath9k.

Talk to you soon.

Jeff
