The package that is available in the repository is 3.6.8-1(Namoroka). I wanted to install a stable version. So, I downloaded the stable version firefox3.6.8.tar.bz2. If I just unpack it, Firefox works fine. I wanted to know if i need to create any link files at some places or is there any process I need to go through to install from a tar.bz2 file?

firefox-3.6.8-1 means firefox version 3.6.8, package version 1 - it is identical from what you downloaded from mozilla. Just use the package from the repos.
edit: ahh, did you mean the branding (firefox vs Namoroka)? Namoroka is a "stable" release as well, I think the dailys are called "minefield"
never cared about that, but info about rebranding should be plenty in the wiki/forums.

if you are getting confused with the name, Namaroka, its just a development build name of firefox. We have to keep using it because of branding issues. but its the exact same thing as hokasch mentioned.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

just to let you know, firefox has codename and those are picked to support natural reservation parks.
namoroka is a park from Madagascar
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Codenames
so what you get from repos is the stable release but without any official branding, because we are not allowed to use them
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

There are also branded firefox builds in AUR
