Hello everybody,
This is the kind of message I don't like to write, because I don't want to give the impression that ArchLinux maintainers do bad work, when indeed they do very good work and release applications quite fast most of time . So I'm sorry if I hurt some of you.
It's been some days now since KDE 4.5.0 was released, and still nothing in the repos?
It seems there are reasons to it, but I'm not sure:
- There are a lot of bugs or not so cute behaviors (on some configurations KDE 4.5.0 seems to be slow, on others, KDM doesn't work...)
- kdepim is not included: this means, either we don't use it at all, or we use the 4.4.5 kdepim with other packages upgraded to kde 4.5.0, or we stick to kde 4.4.5
For the bugs part: to me, this means there are regressions in the code (or some new code simply is not finished, but then why is it 4.5.0)!? We have something that works quite well with KDE 4.4.5, and with 4.5.0 it isn't anymore. If it's the case, maybe it's a sign that KDE development process should be a little bit more conservative... When I see "KDE SC 4.5.0 released", I'm looking forward to using it (with much excitement), and really, after such a release, where the only comments are "performance improved, desktop is polished,...", then I must say each day waiting for it is as long as years. This simply is not good.
For kdepim: do we, Archlinuxers, face the same packaging difficulties as in Gentoo, when it comes up to using the 'old' kdepim from 4.4.5 with kde 4.5.0? My prefered solution would be to have a standard KDE SC 4.5.0 with kdepim 4.4.5. Is this difficult to have?
Now a question: how may I help packagers find out bugs and issues when KDE 4.5 is in testing? I don't want to update all my packages to testing packages: I'd like to keep everything that is not KDE 4.5 from stable repositories while installing KDE 4.5 from testing. What's the easiest way to do it?
Thanks

testing is a repo. maybe you wanted to mean extra?

most kde problems are because of that. the only way and the proper way is to enable testing and do pacman -Syu
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Yes, an unclear 11 pages long thread...
I'm not an Arch maintainer and sometimes comments in Forums may be clear to people involved in packaging, but to me, the thread gives no clear answer to my questions.

I mean stable repos.
So there's no way to test KDE 4.5.0 an ArchLinux without, for example, upgrading to kernel 2.6.35 (which also is in testing and would be installed if I use pacman -Syu with testing enabled)?

Please familiarise yourself with the way Arch works, and in particular the way the Arch repos are used. The testing repo is used for packages that the devs want to test before general release. Users are invited to use the testing repo to assist with the identification and resolution of any issues that may arise with such packages. You are very welcome to participate in this process, but if you do not wish to do so, please be patient - 4.5 will be moved to the extra repo when the testing is concluded.

OK Thank you, I wanted to be sure there's no other way to test KDE 4.5.0. Now I am, I'm able to decide if I want to test or not.

there are ways to ignore kernel26 as is not related to kde.
man pacman.conf Ignorepkg
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Yes of course, but I think it would be easier to say: only install kde, than say install everyting but kernel26, texlive, iproute...
I hoped there would be easier ways than ignoring every single package that is not related to KDE SC
I'm not an expert, so I apologize if my comments seem to be irrelevant to some of you.
Thanks for the answers

As it was said in other thread.. Enable testing repo (in /etc/pacman.conf) and after that just do "pacman -Sy testing/kde". After install disable testing repo. After these steps you will have just KDE 4.5 installed from testing repo and not kernel26 and other packages from testing..

that wouldn't update properly kde because doesn't have versioned dependencies.
like i said in this thread, the proper way to update the kde is pacman -Syu and that's it. You can add --ignore package1 --ignore package2 if you don't want kernel26 or any other packages.

I've updated KDE like I wrote and everything is running nicely without crashes (except some issues with khotkeys)

installed kdemod 4.5 over previous version on the netbook
upgrade went without a hitch. I did not modify pacmn.conf (order of repos) nor removed .kdemod4
Obviously this was possible because on the netbook I have only very basic installation.
Bad things:
1) kde 4.5 is more power hungry (which is quite ridiculous)
2) more RAM used (jumped from 69MB to 89MB)
Good things:
1) well it works?
seems like KDE devs are forgetting that laptops dominate market (so thinking about energy and lower video requirements would be a really good idea).
funny:
Power Management/Capabilities shows 0 CPUs

(except some issues with khotkeys)
which are likely caused by the fact that khotkeys needs another testing package which you probably missed.

How bad,
Do you know if it depends from desktop effects?

@op you can help in testing by installing Arch in a separate partition altogether and enabling testing in that installation. That way you won't have to worry about messing up your actual system.
On a general note, a lot has to go on in testing software and especially software that is huge like KDE is. Not only KDE has to be tested for its immediate dependencies, it also has to be tested with the most common applications to make sure nothing else breaks. This obviously takes time. Statements/Queries like "Software X released so many days ago, why isn't it in the repos yet?" doesn't help anything. If we had more testers it would be sooner, but it seems that most KDE users want the latest and the greatest without having to help out in all that goes into getting an application/software released.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I just noticed that KDE 4.5 is available in kdemod-core now. (--> http://chakra-project.org/download-kdemod.html)
So that might be an alternative if you don't want to wait until the "plain Arch" version is moved to extra.
