Re: dual monitor help

godtuti, There are a bunch of threads on this. Please search the forum before posting.

Also, you have not given any information about your setup. It is highly unlikely that anyone is going to be of any help without that information.
Information about what your graphics card is and what drivers you use for it or what DE/WM you use

I would add that ALL of the above would be helpful, as well as whether or not the OP wants compositing or not.

Re: dual monitor help

The simplest way you can use dual monitors is by using xrandr. Find out the names of your outputs using that command and then accordingly set them up. More info is on the wiki or in numerous threads.

xrandr

Once you know your outputs, then you can set them up using

xrandr --output <output1> --auto --right-of <output0>

Slow down for a second.  What exactly is your specific problem then?  Because it sounds like your hardware is working via autodetect.

When you say "mirroring each other" do you mean that one monitor is cloning the output of the other...or what?

Re: dual monitor help

Old vga cables seem to cause problems with monitor autodetect.  I found this out the hard way after hours of messing with config files etc.

Re: dual monitor help

I find it strange that the xrandr command is not detecting the second monitor at all but he can still see the cloning. Are you sure the monitors were connected when you executed xrandr?

Could be.  I had two new monitors used the cables from my old monitors (being to lazy to unplug them from the computer).  The cable from my really old monitor was stopping randr from detecting my monitor.  Hours of frustration later I tried the new cables that came with the new monitors and bingo

If it really is the cables, then there's really not much you can do besides buy new ones. Do you have somebody that you know that may have a cable laying around that you could test?
