RT2870 Module Issues

My problem in a nutshell: My usb adapter is slow and blacklisting rt2800usb/lib or rt2x00usb/lib does not help.

I did a lot of googling (maybe not enough) and pretty much the only solution is to blacklist all the rt modules included with the kernel because it will interefere with the driver I want to use, but when I do that, my usb adapter ceases to work at all.  Therefore I'm guessing rt2870sta isn't loaded properly? I tried rmmoding rt2800usb/lib and rt2x00usb/lib and then modprobing rt2870sta but I immediately lose connection....  Any suggestions sad?

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

I have this in /etc/rc.conf:

MODULES=(!rt2800lib !rt2800usb !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib rt2870sta)

All ok here with rt2870sta from kernel26.

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

Ok I figured out what happened.  After blacklisting, the interface changed from wlan0 to ra0.  I forgot to change that in Wicd, which explains why no networks showed up (doh).  So I changed it to ra0 and wala found my network and tried to connect, but got some serious errors.

First it said bad password (network phrase), but that wasn' the problem because I tripled checked my network password, then my computer froze.  Mouse and everything.  A first time for me.  So I did a reboot the dirty way and it was a mess because I had autoconnect feature on so it was trying to reconnect before I could even revert the settings.  Anyway I did manage to turn that auto connect feature off, but I'm afraid to try to connect to any network using the rt2870sta now....

And here's the console output during the connect.  I would copy pasta, but computer was frozen so I had to write it down >_<  it said something like this:

DBusException: did not receive a reply possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network was broken.

Not sure if this was enough to warrant multiple freezes though...  Something is going on and I don't know what.  Any ideas :?

You could try digging around in /var/log/ (messages, everything, errors, ...) for anything suspicious.

Can't figure out why computer freezes after that though.  Any other pertinent log files I should look through as well?

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

I have a RT3070 dongle and decided to give wicd a try in stead of netcfg. I use the driver from the ralink site.

I can confirm the strange behavior Loafers encountered :
- trying to connect to my wireless network failed because of bad passphrase (although I entered the correct one)
- the wicd client freezes, empty dialog boxes appear and finally my computer completely hangs (this is a first since I started using Arch)
- after restarting my computer with netcfg, I even noticed that my mailbox was gone ! In fact I think wicd messed with my mail client's configuration file (I use claws mail). Luckily I have a backup and could restore my mail from the backup.

It looks like the combination of wicd and ralink drivers is a dangerous one ...

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

I guess I'll try using NetworkManager (if I can resolve the policy kit issues) and if that fails... time to shop for a new wifi card...

Anyone got recommendations?

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

Loafers,

I stopped using Archlinux, because it was not possible to use the rt2870 USB adapter and get a stable connection.
I do not have these issues with Mandriva and PCLinuxOS.

Perhaps someone can explain why this problems does not occur in these distros?

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

Too bad I have not seen a reply to my question. It has been 2 months.......
Has the situation improved with Archlinux?

Re: RT2870 Module Issues

You're not really helping the OP. If anyone knew why it was a problem on Arch and not on those distros you mentioned, they would have replied. Saying 'it works on distro X' is not really helpful.
