Cannot log in in kde4 boot-recycles

Recent upgrade of many kde4.5 pkges among others.  Performed pacman -Sc to reduce cache.

Next boot revealed the problem with log-in.  Display looks like older log in, differs from the latest which is larger and not as dark.  This display allows the password to enter but then it recycles back to log-in.  Suggests a problem with X.

Since I had removed old packages with pacman -Sc, I expect that the new packages introduce the problem..say old xorg conf replaced by evdev for example.  Examined /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and find evdev.  This gives no inkling of what might be wrong.

Rebooted into log-in and selected console login.  It responded to root and passwd.

Performed ...startx

X windows appeared...entered exec startkde...(kde4 full)

Display revealed module "intel" not recognized and fbdev module not installed.

Perhaps these two items need to be corrected.  Since I have no experience with evdev what do I do now?

I used to be able to "fix" xorg.

Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

Re: Cannot log in in kde4 boot-recycles

My system is x86_64.

I suspect that Kde configuration has changed but do not know what to look for.

I operate in root and kdmrc allows root-log-in.  The password is accepted by the login but the log-in fails and recycles asking again for the passwd.

The display at login looks like kde3 mode not the newer kde4 log-in window.
As stated in previous thread, X starts in console mode but kde fails to start with the errors in xorg as mentioned.

What changes in kde4 cause these errors to appear?

Perhaps removing the cache of old packages introduced the problem?  I have upgraded almost daily in the x86_64 arena.  The cache became very large so was forced to clear things.

I use full kde4 and delete akonadi after it is installed.

That hasn't caused any problem for a year or more.

I use classic style menu in kde4.  Can't reach that point, now.

Suggestions welcome.
