Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

Hello,

I have been trying to get Arch running on my Macbook, and while there is an excellent Arch wiki article on Macbook, I feel that there are many issues/problems that can easily arise. Whenever I try to solve the problem, I end up looking in Ubuntu forum (where they have Apple user subforum), and finding out that they have their own patches and doesn't help me.

I think there might be enough interest/users of Macbook/Apple computers to have a good discussion. Another reason why this subforum might benefit people is because getting Linux on Apple computers have unique procedures and its own headaches. For example, if I want a solution to my own Macbook problem, I don't want to sift through whole "Laptop issues" subforum because most of them are related to PC laptop/netbooks.

I hope I have expressed myself well enough, and that someone sees in the same way.

Re: Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

But you have to consider that pretty soon, people would start asking for subforums for their favorite <insert brand-model here>

Re: Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

While I have a mbp myself, I don't think this is necessary since Apple computers are all x86-compatible. They all have the same kernel and build options as other pc/laptop-users. True, there are some specifics, but that counts for every brand of laptops or every brand of graphic cards that are slightly different than the desktop variant...

F.e. the graphics card in my mbp (nVidia 9400M) is present in a whole lot of other laptops also. SO if I would ask my question in an Apple-specific forum, then I would possibly miss out on a bunch of people not visiting that particular forum...

I agree that the wiki on this topic could be better, f.e. versioned for every type of mb(p): 4,1 - 5,5 - 6,1 etc. I would be willing to participate in bettering it, but I could use some help in structuring such a page first.

Re: Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

Apart from being EFI-based there's absolutely nothing that sets Macs apart from regular x86 PCs. They use exactly the same hardware. So no, there's no reason to have a separate subforum whatsoever.

Regular non-Mac users have to sift through the whole forum as well to find a solution. Given the limited expandability and model range of Apple, it should actually be easier to get your Mac set up with Linux than a regular x86 box - which after all has endless possible combinations.

Re: Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

Perhaps the subforum is not the solution, but as zenlord suggested, a separate wiki article for each generation of macbook/apple computers maybe the better way to go. I might invest some time in updating the macbook wiki.

Creating a wiki page is much harder than discussing on the forum, but then again, that means more work for the forum mods ;-)

Re: Subforum for Macbook/Apple Computers?

The wiki has talk pages related to wiki entries itself, so you can discuss the content there too. I think the wiki is way more suited for model-specific content and documentation than another subforum.
