No sound in any software.

Good evening.

Half a month ago I discovered to my dismay that the laptop no longer was producing any sound. I've troubleshooted this entire week, and I think I'm ready to ask around on the forum. I've tried pretty much everything to my knowledge only to get disappointed afterwards.

I've reinstalled alsa, I've compiled the packages myself, I've checked logfiles (no errors), and the mixer reports that the card is active, working, and playing at the highest volume possible.

The computer in question is a laptop, and I've tested the speakers in win7, and they work like a charm.

I'm out of ideas. I can't recall changing anything either, the day the sound died..

Re: No sound in any software.

have you tried to reconfigure with alsaconf? try with legacy drivers first.

Re: No sound in any software.

What is your speaker setup? Which soundcard are you trying to use? Have you tried changing the default sound device?

Re: No sound in any software.

No legacy cards found.

Alredy tried alsaconf three times, and it apparently completes perfectly, but still no change.

codycarey: "Speaker setup" is the laptop embedded speaker. All information about the hardware is pretty concisely specified in the first post.

I've not tried changing the default sound device, as the two choices is HDMI sound or the nVidia chip.

I've never touched these settings, and they worked perfectly out of the box when I installed arch a year ago, but alas, it has ceased working by itself.

Re: No sound in any software.

If you have 'aplay' installed I suggest using 'aplay -l' to list all of the available devices. Take the card and device numbers you want to use and plug them into 'aplay' with the -D option and attempt to play a sound file.

Card 0, device 0:
aplay -D hw:0,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Card 1, device 0:
aplay -D hw:1,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

So on and so forth to check that your hardware is working. If it is then you can take that device and set it as your default in your .asoundrc.

No sound from either of my three channels. Didn't bother to check the HDMI-connector as I rarely use it..

Re: No sound in any software.

Nevermind. Problem solved by appending the following to modprobe.conf:

option snd-hda-intel model=auto

At last my two week struggle has come to an end.

Why not marking the thread as [Solved] then?

Thanks. I was having the same proble. I had to change my modprobe.conf as follows:

#options snd-hda-intel model=STAC9220/9221
option snd-hda-intel model=auto

It was no longer recognizing the specific card id.
