[SOLVED] LG evternal DVD writer - no contact, pls hlp

Hi,

Bought an LG GP08 lite external DVD writer. It does'nt want to "connect to/find" the inserted disc, it spins up and down, up (to retry?) and down,

Here's what I did:
- plugged into an USB port known to work - my MP3 player is happy with it
- iserted a blank CD rom and then annother one (perhaps the first disc was broken)
- inserted a written disk

Did the whole thing again on annother USB port (in front)

No luck.

Output of lsusb

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 056a:0062 Wacom Co., Ltd Volito2 4x5
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0a81:0205 Chesen Electronics Corp. PS/2 Keyboard+Mouse Adapter
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 152e:2571 LG (HLDS)
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Arch does see the thing, but no luck...

What manual do I read?

Tnx

Thor

your problem is probably more related to CD/DVD not being auto mounted. Try those key words in the Search. You should find a bunch of threads.

Your  LG drive is being seen, so I don't think that's the problem.

Hi Inxsible,

My thought too..what is strange is that the extenal hard drive and the MP3 player get detected just like that...I'll sniff tru the forum to find some options.

Tnx!

An entry in lsusb doesn't necessarily mean that the drive is being seen. It simply means that the kernel can read the device ID tag which has nothing to with actual functionality.  If the relevant /dev entries are not created, lsusb output doesn't mean anything.

OK...so, the device can be seen, so I need to edit the fstab file, mine looks like this:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>        <dir>         <type>    <options>          <dump> <pass>
devpts                 /dev/pts      devpts    defaults            0      0
shm                    /dev/shm      tmpfs     nodev,nosuid        0      0

#/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0

I may have to uncomment a line, or (possibly) add this line:

/dev/hdd /mnt/dvdrw iso9660 ro,users,noauto 0 0

to the mix...I just need to get over the fear of losing my system...

So, can I destroy the system if I uncomment/add a line?

no that does not destroy them.

But, you shouldn't have to uncomment them in fstab because they should act as usb devices, where they get auto mounted the moment you put in a CD/DVD or floppy.

Re: [SOLVED] LG evternal DVD writer - no contact, pls hlp

ok, so possibly looking at HAL's behaviour - that (auto)mounts stuff.

The External hard drive (IOMEGA) does mount nicely...as does the MP3 player - on the same port...

Interested in the dmesg outout?

ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 4 reset error -110
hub 1-0:1.0: hub_port_status failed (err = -32)
hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2
usb 1-4: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 17
hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2
usb 1-4: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 17
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
ISOFS: changing to secondary root
hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2
hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2
usb 1-4: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 17

Just a 'tail I manually did...

I'm looking into all sorts of directions (and learning in the process - THE reason I started to use Arch) and may not be able to come up with more feedback...

I dont know what to look for and where to look for it...

Sorry

Ok,

I gave it a data DVD to eat and it did mount (be it ever so slow) the disk. A blank CD is more of a challenge - I suspect it tries to mount the blank disk.

It's been on and off for some minutes now. Brassero does not see the disk though...

...please hit me on the head...

OK, I just gave it a blank ... DVD and presto, it asked what to do: open Brasero to ...burn a DVD?
So...the LG external DVD writer can only write ... DVD's.
ok, I may have to learn to live with that...
Thanks! To all of you...learned something again...I love Arch Linux

Addendum

I cannot write - yet - but I blame the USB port for not havng enough power, the writer has to go back to the shop...

(I hope I'm allowed to add an addendum in a solved thread - if not: sorry)
