Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

I just re-checked the arch wiki against my config file...everything looks correct, so why isn't my log showing that it's syncronizing with the pool servers?

Port 123 is not being blocked by any other process:

$ grep 123 /etc/services
ntp 123/tcp # Network Time Protocol
ntp 123/udp # Network Time Protocol

This is the contents of /conf.d/ntp-client.conf (no mention of what the settings should be on the arch wiki):

# change this to a server closer to your location
NTP_CLIENT_SERVER="pool.ntp.org"

# client options
NTP_CLIENT_OPTION="-b -u"

# timeout for the ntp-client
NTPCLIENT_TIMEOUT=10

# arguments passed to ntpd when started
NTPD_ARGS="-g"
# cat /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift
14.644

Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

Do you use IPv6 at all in your network?

Does ntpd completely fail to start or does it just not work correctly?

Thanks for responding.  I do not use IPv6 and ntpd does start up, it just never syncronizes with the servers.

Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

Why is ntpd exiting and what is signal 15?

Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

How are you starting it?
If you start it from the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf, the network may not yet be up.  Prefix it with @ to background it until its dependencies are up.

If you are starting it by hand after your network is up using /etc/rc.d/ntpd start then I've no clue.

I was going to suggest you play with ntpdc or ntpq , but that would be pointless if the daemon itself has gone Tango Uniform.

This is my DAEMONS array:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @crond dbus avahi-daemon alsa network @ddclient @sshd @ntpd netfs)

If I run the command:

sudo /etc/rc.d/ntpd restart

The service successfully stops and starts again, but when I immediately check the ntp.log, it shows:

ntpd exiting on signal 15

It seems to be communicating with the pool

$ ntpq -p

but the log never shows a syncronization and it always has that exit error message in the ntp.log every time ntpd starts during boot or manually.

Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

Are you sure its not running??  :-/
If it is not running, ntpq should complain about not being able to connect.
Check /var/run/daemons and see what is there.  It might be that an invisible hand is starting it for you.  Here are some ntp lines grep'ed from my logs:

  It has the exit messages, but it also shows other ntpd activity.  Furthermore, it is in my /var/run/daemons.

I think if you look at sysinfo using ntpdc, you will find you are at stratum 3.  Here is mine

Re: I can't seem to get ntpd working

Prefix it with @ to background it until its dependencies are up.

This is not entirely true.  Prefixing with @ means only 'start in background' so as to let the next DAEMON in the list start immediately.  If your network were prefixed with @ this might be an issue but changing ntpd to @ will not affect anything as far as 'waiting for dependencies' goes.

Are you sure it's simply not logging the updates... Everything in this thread so far is showing that ntpd is working fine, it's just not logging "updated system time" or whatever you're looking for.

Try throwing off your clock and seeing if it brings it back -- if it does, then start looking into /etc/syslog-ng.conf or something.

I changed the system clock to an erroneous time and restarted ntpd.  It did not correct the time.

EDIT: Actually, it did correct the time, but it took a little while.  It does seem to be synchronizing, but there's no confirmation in the logs.  I guess it doesn't matter as long as it works.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for in /etc/syslog-ng.conf, but here it is if you want to take a look at it:
