HI everyone !
I have this issue with hd playback . I'm using openbox ,mplayer and i have a cpu 1.86 ghz , 1gb ram , geforce 6600 go 128mb .
I've noticed that when playing anime which are 720p i don't have any issue at all .
When playing big files movies in 720p the playback is slow , not annoying slow but every 2-3 seconds there is an instant freeze . On windows i 'm using coreavc and i don't have this issue .
However if i recall corectly when i was using gnome with totem player i didn't have an issue either . SO this could be a mplayer problem
My mplayer config file is pretty simple
ao = alsa
vo = xv
embeddedfonts = yes
a** = yes
If anyone could help me out i would be grateful because mplayer is my favourite video player. THanks

Is the cpu dual-core or hyperthreaded?. If yes, mplayer-mt is the thing to try. Otherwise it looks weird, that some files play ok but some don't. One idea, but I doubt it'll make a difference - try with cache:
mplayer -cache 8192 somefile.mkv

No it's not dual core or hyperthreaded . Yes it is weird , my notebook is just as capable to play hd files . Could it be that the nvidia drivers on linux are different than the windowz ?

It actually made a difference , the playback now is perfect . Out of curiocity what does this cache option do anyways ? And should i add this option to my config file so that mplayer will use it for all kind of files or
is it best to just use this option only when i'm facing the playback issues ? (with only big 720p files (movies))
Thanks in advace!

It buffers x amount of data before playback starts. Certainly won't hurt to add it to ~/.mplayer/config.
Take a look at cache-min too,
cache=8192
cache-min=20
