Openbox system-tray issue (pidgin/skype)

hi everyone,

as im a fairly new linux user who migrated here from puppy linux, i still need to learn a lot.
i recently managed to setup my first arch system with openbox.
since i dont want to use a tray bar, apps like pidgin and skype get lost when minimized (which normally go to the system tray). i havent found and option in skype and cant access pidgin coz its starting minimized :(
is there any way to fix this ?

If you want a system tray for openbox you'll need to install a stand-alone one. Stalonetray and docker are a couple that are in the repos.

If you want to access minimized apps in openbox by default a middle-click (scrollwheel) shows windows including minimized ones, of course you can change that in your rc.conf.

Re: Openbox system-tray issue (pidgin/skype)

u did not get my problem :<

i DO NOT want to use a tray bar ! the problem is; things like skype normally minimize to the system tray and such are not shown in openbox`s tabbing feature !
so these get irrecoverably lost sad
i always have to kill and start them again...

I'm not sure what you want to happen though. And I'm not sure why you're so dead set against a tray bar. What magic thing would you expect to happen if you minimize to system tray and there is no tray? Most apps have a setting where you can turn off the minimize to tray behaviour. Maybe skype has one?

Just don't minimize the app at all. Assign a workspace for skype. That will make sure it will always start on (workspace 4, say) and always take up the entire screen. Even when you are on other workspaces, you will get the notification of a message or a call.

I do the same in my i3 setup.

Just run skype  again. If it is minimized to tray then it should show itself without creating another instance.
