Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

There is something to be said about searching the forums and more importantly reading the stickies.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56373

But as B mentions in that thread, for you to get so many file conflicts is not right. How long between your updates?

and please use code tags to show output and commands.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

I update regularly. From last 2 weeks, this is happening. I put the 'filesystem' in ignore pkg in pacman.conf, update/upgrade and then remove it.
pl. take my word that i update regularly, and this is happening from 2 weeks.

For this particular package it may not be a good idea. How did you install it in the first place: via pacman or did you copy those files by hand?

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Perhaps you should do e2fsck on the drive and then try to upgrade.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Karol, i did nothing , only pacman -Syu.
Filesystem s one of the packages listed, which is listed, and not installing. Since it tries to upgrade/install the filesystem first, other packages that are downloaded, for eg, dbus, dbus core, etc are also not upgraded

shall I force install? Getting desperate, since today Xorg 1.9 is downloaded (SYu), but not installed, due to the file system conflict

Yes, forcing may fix it, but please, backup first and have a liveCD ready, just in case.
I fear that it may overwrite with the default settings, I'm not sure if '-f' creates .pacnew files.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

you better not delete or merge any file. Those files that are listed are not just any config file. Your system may be rendered inoperable if you delete or replace them with new ones.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

So now that is out of the way...

Look in the folder /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-20xx.xx-x and tell us what files you have there.  It appears at least the "files" file is lost...

Make one and add this to it

That may or may not work...   so also backup all the conflicting files before running pacman again.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

There is an edit button...

Anyway, this falls into the not a good thing category...

Try something like

mkdir /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2010.08-1/
cd /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2010.08-1/
touch depends desc files

then add what I posted above to the "files" file.  "pacman -Syu" should hopefully work...

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Dear Allan

Hats off to you, your suggestion / guidance is invaluable. Everything worked perfectly, after I created the filesystem as you sugggested. My heartfelt thanks to you.
Is it OK to clear the cache?. Usually, after sucessful upgrade, I clear it by -Scc. Now, I am afraid
Some 20 packages upgraded just now, after your fix was implemented.
But for your suggestion, I would have S..... the intallation

As you can see from the number of my posts, I am still a newbie. One day in future, hope I will be of some use to the community

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

If you have room I would save your current packages by only doing a "pacman -Sc".

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Dear Allan

Need your help again. I just restarted the system for changes to take effect. Now, my GNOME desktop is not shown. In command line prompt, when I give my login name, password, it is saying wrong.
unable to login as superuser also.
tried to login in 'fallback mode', not possible, same message.
what might have gone wrong?. only thing I can think of is, i moved some .pacnew files into their orginal files, (eg: resolv.conf.pacnew to reolv.conf)

do not suggest a fresh install, though I have the 2010.05 ISO CD. Mine is a dial up connection. And again, no wvdial, .......so....too much trouble

How did you merge those .pacnew files? If you just moved them, then you reset your settings: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105301

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Looks like some of those files were overwritten...  they should not have been...   Boot into the live.  Mount your / somewhere, chroot into it and then change the root password.  Then boot as root and readd your user.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

Dear Karol
If something had not been done for the file system, -Syu would have simply downloaded 'n' number of packages, without installing them.

What I fail to understand is, I update regularly, and how this file-system conflict cropped up.

I never installed anything manually, but for wvdial, since base-install does not have it. Plain ppp does not work. I have put in 300hours or more than that, trying everything on web.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

You wrote you moved resolv.conf.pacnew to resolv.conf. If you did the same for /etc/shadow you reset your passwords and you can't get it.

Ummm...

It seems that you don't read all the posts
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 08#p833408

also, right after my post Allan told you not to Force install.

Re: [solved] Filesystem-conflicts

After a long struggle, I am now able to log in, only in CLI. Gnome not loading. In CLI, as user / SU when I try to start GNOME by 'gnome-session', it says " warning cannot open display".
I have checked rc.conf, inittab, xorg, all connected files. Could not find anything.

Also during start up, It displays some message, which I cant read properly, since it just flies past. Is there a way to hold it and read the message?

Dear Inxisible

How did you conclude that I force installed?. I have not. But only created files as suggested by Allan
