When to reboot a VPS
Hi,
I'm running a VPS on ArchLinux and I was wondering if anybody had guidelines on when to reboot when there are critical updates of core components. For example, when there is a kernel update, should I reboot my node or are the changes automatically applied or...?
The web sites I am running on the VPS are not that critical and reboot is usually fast, but in one instance, a badly configured script during init prevented other programs to start and it took ~5 minutes to get up again.

depends on what kind of VPS. if it has openvz, the template doesn't even have kernel26 in it and is useless since is a container that runs on top of a modified kernel
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Ahh... you're right and that explains lots of things. I keep forgetting the difference between openvz and xen: I've been on xen for a while and recently switched to an openvz provider that was faster and more reliable, but I've ran into a few issues that I never encountered on xen before.
I'm still interested to hear about how others are managing these kinds of update and reboot (e.g., if I ever move to a dedicated server/xen node).
