How do I install on legacy ide? [Solved]

I have the latest downloadable version of arch and there is no option I can see to put in "ide-legacy".

I have that, it is giving me issue when I try to pacman. Guess I can keep trying stuff.

Please be more specific:
- which image are you using
- what errors are you encountering - post the error messages - and when does it happen

I don't know what the image is, it is old, text based and lets me type arch "ide-legacy" to start the install, since a regular install will fail to get to the installer without it. It has no partitioning options for setting /var or /usr like in the wiki.

The error occurs when I am updating the system, bunch of stuff to pull down, then it says that I should update pacman first, I agree and then the system says

error: error while reading package: Unrecognized archive format: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
error: failed to commit transaction (libarchive error)

I try and do a direct pacman of libarchive nad the same thing happens

This must be a really old pacman that doesn't know about .pkg.tar.xz files.

Indeed, which is why I wanted to know how you enabled the "ide-legacy" option on newer builds, since all I need to do with the old one is arch "ide-legacy" at the prompt and I am off and away. It would solve the problem, I have been reading about the libarchive issue on these forms, doesn't sound easily solved.

The version of pacman I have lets me install on IDE hard drives. Without that option, the install won't generate, the newer install doesn't seem to have the option at all.

Do you mean PATA? I have a PATA drive and I was able to install to it fine a few months ago. (Sorry I'm a bit ignorant about this. I'm just wondering why the installer would not be able to handle it.)

I installed from a CD, the newer version of arch linux doesn't seem to accept "ide-legacy" as a variable for installation.

Edit: missed that "n't" cause I am tired and repeating things that I have already posted. On what appears to be along standing issue with anyone who has a build pre a certain period.

Why do you want to use the old legacy ide driver instead of libata?

Your cdrom etc should work just fine with the libata driver.

And have you tried the new archboot images?

Anyway, you can boot with ide-legacy,but you will have to edit the boot line yourself.

I don't know what libata is, I need the "IDE-legacy" option because I am installing on IDE hard drives, when I let any installer run without the option, the installer won't load, it freezes. The older build, I think it is Don't Panic, states how to start the install with that option enabled, the newer one does not. I am sure there is a way to edit the install parameters to make the latest build of arch linux install on IDE legacy, however, the build does not state how and no one seems to know how.

There are still controllers out there that don't work with libata well, those need the old ide subsystem.

Thank you very much for this. I can get the install to start running but have alot more options than the build I had before. I have 3 IDE HDs: 80 GBs, 120 GBs, and 160 GBs. The system made me put bios_grub partitions on each drive that was about 1MB [not sure if I was using parted right but it seemed to have no issue], on the 80 GB I wanted to create a 100 MB boot partition and make the rest of the drive a prime. I made whole partitions of the 120 GB and 160 GB drives. I used the raid utility to make a linear raid of the prime partition left on on the 80 and the 120 and 160 drives. Then I used LVM. I created a volume I called root, one called home and a swap.

After the packages I tried to install the bootloader, on that part of the 80GB I had set aside outside of the raid/LVM area. I choose grub2 it didn't work. I'll keep at it but I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for how I should set up my drives and an optimal way or example to use RAID and LVM. Thank you.

Do you really need RAID and LVM? LVM on its own would do what you describe.
