Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

hi all

was running awesome-git v3.4.96 (Closing In).  started getting xcb errors, fixed with cairo-xcb from aur (solved here).

next login i'm getting this error from /var/log/slim.log:

awesome: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: cairo_ft_font_options_substitute

decided to try and install stable awesome release from aur, v3.4.8, unable to compile due to:

Linking C executable awesome
/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so: undefined reference to 'cairo_ft_font_options_substitute'
/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so: undefined reference to 'cairo_ft_font_face_create_for_pattern'

so far unable to resolve.  anyone else?  smile

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

are you using a custom cairo package another then cairo-xcb, or a custom pango? hmm

i just recompiled awesome from aur and it works ok without any errors of that kind during compilation.

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

not to my knowledge.  cairo-xcb from aur and pango from extra.  nothing custom.

the problem install is on an i686 netbook.  i should have mentioned that smile  i'm posting this from my x64 laptop and it's running awesome-git just fine.

over sixty views and nobody is having a similar problem?  that's not encouraging.

anybody want to offer a little advice on where i might look for the problem?  i'm running up against the edge of my abilities with linux here.

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

I, too, am having this issue with awesome 3.4.8 (from the normal repos) - and on a netbook to boot. It appeared after I made a major pacman update.

Here's the error I get when I attempt to launch awesome:

awesome: symbol lookup error: awesome: undefined symbol: cairo_xcb_surface_create

Here's my pacman.log:

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

OK, I managed to get awesome to work again by first doing "pacman -Rcs awesome" and then by getting 3.4.8 from the AUR. It complained about some missing dependencies, but those were easily found & installed via pacman (except for cairo-xcb, which I had to get from AUR).

Thanks anonymous_user!

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

bas1: pacman -Rcs awesome and reinstall does nothing for me (nor do i understand why it would, but i figured i'd give it a go).  your original problem with xcb_surface_create was my original problem as well, and was solved by installing cairo-xcb from aur as per the [solved] post i linked to in my initial post.

still stuck here and not at all sure where to go next.  i'll post the problem to the awesome mailing list and report back if anyone there has any ideas.

Re: Awesome 3.4.8 libpangocairo error [i686]

this from Uli on the awesome-users list:

If I were to guess, I'd say that your cairo is compiled without freetype and fontconfig support while your pangocairo is compiled with both enabled.

Did you compile cairo or pango yourself? Any magic you applied?

i applied no magic smile

i'm not a complete arch noob, but i'm looking at the PKGBUILDS for pango in abs and cairo-xcb from aur, and i don't fully understand how to check whether those options are enabled or disabled.  should i be looking somewhere else?  is there a simple way to check which options are compiled in?
