I just started a new Arch installation on one of my older boxes. Everything has gone super amazingly, up until trying to boot into a login manager. I tried XDM and GDM.
I'm using XFCE as my Desktop Environment. It runs perfectly when I start it from the command line. I changed my inittab to auto boot into level 5. I even tried doing a telinit 5 and that did nothing. But when I do startxfce4 it runs flawlessly. I changed the bottom of the inittab to auto boot into XDM as well.
I have added hal, dbus, and even xdm into my DAEMONS. I am at a complete loss as what to try next. Maybe you guys can help?
Thanks!

Give slim a go see if that makes any difference

Use inittab OR rc.conf DAEMONS - not both.
What happens if you boot to cli, login as root, and run xdm?

Okay so I tried slim, and nothing changed at all. Even when I'm only using inittab OR Daemons.
Except for when I took slim out of the DAEMONS. Thanks tomk! That was it. I just changed inittab to slim and it booted up perfectly.
I gotta say, this community rocks. Thanks everyone!

Oh wait...Now when I try to login it says 'Failed to execute login command'
Anyone know what that is?
