configuring xorg

:? If I run xorgconfig and try to startx, it crashes.
If I let hwd -s write a xorg.conf.hwd file and then copy it to xorg.conf, startx works fine, except my mouse and keyboard don't. It doesn't recognize my monitor (NEC MultiSync LCD1720M)
or video card (ATI Radeon 9200). Xorg did not ask what type of monitor I had, and I had to use ATI generic for card type.
I would like to get my mouse (Logitech Trackball)  and keyboard (Microsoft Natural or whatever --  the curvy one) working. I'll worry about the monitor and the video card later.
    What annoys me is I recently installed Arch in a IBM T-23 and it went in very nicely. Anybody mind giving some assistance? thanks in advance -- Larry sad

I have a logitech marble mouse (trackball) that works well.  Here's a snippet of my xorg.conf:

Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"    "Auto"

    Option "EmulateWheelButton" "4"
    Option "EmulateWheelInertia" "3"

You don't need xorg to recognize your monitor, just make sure you have the correct Horizsync and Verisync settings.  You can find them online for your model most likely.  Can't help you with the keyboard.

Running 'xorgcfg -textmode' probably is safer since it starts the configuration in (I think) an ncurses menu.

:?  FUBAR/smith I think Arch is the best linux out there. It installed beautifully on my T-23. You should see the mess I have on my desktop! It installs fine up to the point of xorgconfig. If I pacman KDE, than,  Xorg, than hwd everything is fine. I tried 5 or 6 times to xorgconfig and KDE would crash everytime. If I hwd -s and then copy the file to xorg.conf at least KDE runs. I'm stuck in 1280 x 724 screen resolution, try to change it and it crashes. I had the same problem in a dell c-610, would'nt work worth a $h!t. I went to another forum and asked about their linux and ATI --Their reply was the same--ALL LINUX has a problem with ATI. I'll check out the other websites, but I'll probably buy a Nvidia card. That's not the Linux way! You go and make your ATi work goddammit! Hardware has to listen to you, not the other way round! tongue I'm sure this can work. Post your xorg.conf so we can have a look.

Just curious, why delete this lines Phrakture? Does it mean only root is allowed access to dri?

Hwd doesn't properly set up mouse and keyboard for whatever reason. It might be worth looking into a little more, but it seems like the same thing happens for everyone.

big_smile Thanks a lot phrakture, you have the rignt code!!! My mouse works in PS/2, I can resize the screen, everything seems to be working. I did not rem out the last section, everything still seems to work fine. Where or when did you learn how to do all this??
    I don't know what to think of hwd, it got my H & V sync rates wrong,  I used the ones in the manual.
    FUBAR --THANK YOU, I don't need to spend more $ on another card! :oops: I still have to configure alsa and cups, so I'll probably be back for more assistance Thanks for the replies-- Larry

Yeah, you only delete that line if you use NV cards.

many years of doing it on different systems.  I think most people start off using xorgcfg or xorgconfig or something like that (knoppix or hwd), but after a bit, you begin to realise that it's a very simple configuration file... you just need to know the format, and what's required.  I honestly don't know all the parameters for each driver and things like that, but I can get a working system together off the top of my head...
