audio was working fine up until a few days ago. i tried setting an alarm clock with kalarm and when i tried to test the command (just vlc some/file/name.mp3) i would hear some KDE chime that says the command was run. when vlc loaded though, i got an error saying that i needed to update alsa-lib to a new version. i reinstalled both alsa and vlc.. same error.
now i get no sound at all.
ive run alsaconf and the card seems to be successfully installed but when i run alsamixer i get this error:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
other info:
~ # ls /dev/snd/
by-path controlC1 controlC2 hwC1D0 pcmC1D0c pcmC1D0p pcmC1D1p seq timer
~ # cat /proc/asound/cards

You may want to read Arch wiki on Alsa, not sure what the problem is guessing you have updated your system lately.

Is alsa-utils installed?
pacman -S alsa-utils

well i was having weird little issues like i described in the first post. i updated my system hoping that it would fix the problem (i hadnt updated in a looong time). now i have nothing.
i uninstalled all of KDE thinking that it was some weird issue with ARTS or phonon or whatever the hell KDE uses.. still get nothing.
ive read the wiki but im still having issues.
alsa-utils are installed.

If it's been a long time since you've updated, I'm guessing that there was probably a kernel update in the mix. If so, perhaps all you need to do is to reboot and use the new kernel.

nope. ive rebooted quite a few times since updating.

If you have only recently updated and this was around the time of sound problem then you may have to check that pacman is up to date and mirrorlist is up to date
Check pacman pkg version against main site

core/pacman 3.4.2-1 [installed] (base)
A library-based package manager with dependency support
core/pacman-mirrorlist 20101223-1 [installed]
Arch Linux mirror list for use by pacman
looks good to me.
and ive uninstalled and reinstalled alsa thinking it may have been an update issue.
no dice.
