Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

Hi,

as the message says, I made an upgrade today (64-Bit Arch):

[2011-01-21 17:02] starting full system upgrade
[2011-01-21 17:02] removed sip (4.12-3)
[2011-01-21 17:02] removed pyqt (4.8.2-2)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded dmidecode (2.10-1 -> 2.11-1)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded ffmpeg (26387-1 -> 20110121-1)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded pm-utils (1.4.1-1 -> 1.4.1-2)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded python2-sip (4.12-2 -> 4.12-4)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded python2-qt (4.8.2-3 -> 4.8.2-4)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded upower (0.9.7-2 -> 0.9.8-2)
[2011-01-21 17:02] upgraded xfce4-diskperf-plugin (2.1.0-5 -> 2.3.0-1)
[2011-01-21 17:03] Running 'pacman -Scc'

As you can see, I was brave enough to clear the object cache right after the upgrade. roll

After rebooting and logging into Slim, the screen turns black for 1 second every 30 seconds. It's annoying.
The problem doesn't occur while in the BIOS, Grub or Slim, it starts with XFCE. It doesn't make any difference if I log in as root or as normal user.

The only log that shows something that seems worth mentioning to a noob like me is errors.log:

Jan 21 20:04:35 kassel kernel: [drm:radeon_dvi_detect] *ERROR* DVI-I-2: probed a monitor but no|invalid EDID

But I don't know where to go from there. Any help is appreciated!

I would say, look into your powermanager/screensaver -- anything that requires upower. Otherwise, your problems could not be caused by the update you mention hmm

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

After a system upgrade my screen started flickering from time to time  not depending on  what i was doing at the moment.
Downgrading pkgs one at a time ,led me to the solution of the flickering problem , which was to stay with upower 0.9.7-2 pkg.
So , did anyone else experience similar problems?
My system info is

Kernel        : Linux 2.6.36-ARCH (x86_64)
xorg                   1.9.2
gpu        : ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]  with xf86-video-ati 6.13.2-2 driver
GNOME 2.32.1

Those are your eyelids. Think of it as your body's way of logging sleep error messages. Shut down for 8 hours and reboot.

Ok, now trying to be helpful....

Of those packages, I would investigate pm-utils and maybe upower. Follow this flowchart from "I don't have the old package(s).".

You could also try getting the old versions from an unsynchronized mirror: https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/

I don't think that pm-utils is the problem. FWIW upower is OK here on an i686 (xfce too).

About the chart -- hmm... What kind of screwed mind does it take to follow it completely? smile I usually skip to the vodoo part directly.

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

After I realized the screen turns black for a second also when I started XFCE's screen settings manager, and that it stayed black when I did changes like frequency or resolution, I tried connecting my LCD with DVI. After that the problem was solved. Previously it was connected with VGA, because I have an old fashioned KVM. I tried it with VGA but without KVM switch, and the problem was back.
This never made any problems for years, until the last update. I think there is some bug, preventing the LCD's properties to be recognized correctly, and some task tries to read them again every 30 seconds.

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

In my case VGA was the problem (SCART is a different type of connector, btw). If you have the opportunity to try DVI it would be interesting if it cures your problem too. Do you use 32 or 64 bit Arch?

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

Can someone with this problem downgrade upower and post the result like cloyd did? I don't have the old version in my object cache and since I never had to do a downgrade before, I don't know if I'll be successful. Will be a lot easier for someone who has the old version in the cache.

Cloyd, is your monitor connected with VGA or DVI?

With VGA to DVI adapter , my monitor doesnt have DVI and my graphics -card doesnt have VGA input , so i use the adapter.

I had the same problem, and downgrading upower from 0.9.8-2 to 0.9.7-2 solved it here.
The screen is connected with VGA and I use x86_64.

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

any of you actually tried to debug and report upstream the problem?

see here what you have todo https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22586#comment71270

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

mario.torme, please do not cross-post in multiple threads. There is no point and will not get you answers any faster.

Here's the exact same post that you made here :  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 59#p882759

Re: Screen turns black every 30 seconds after last upgrade

I had the same problem with the blinking screen.

Downgrading upower (from the schlunix repo) worked and the blinking is gone.
