Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

When I was first setting up (latest netinstall iso, x86_64) I was using wpa_passphrase and wpa_supplicant just fine in fetching new packages and the like. I did this about 2 weeks ago (Jan 27). Some time ago when I updated and restarted, I noticed that I was having no luck trying to connect to anything.

I did some searches here in the forums and tried downgrading my consolekit (I was using Wicd), but no luck there. My daemons are pretty bare bones. I'll post my rc.conf shortly.

My last successful wireless web connection was on January 30th. Here's pacman.log:

Re: Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

I can see that you had a kernel upgrade the last time you were able to log in:

[2011-01-30 23:23] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.36.3-2 -> 2.6.37-5)
[2011-01-30 23:23] upgraded kernel26-docs (2.6.36.3-2 -> 2.6.37-5)
[2011-01-30 23:23] upgraded kernel26-headers (2.6.36.3-2 -> 2.6.37-5)

I wonder if that has anything to do with your problem. I have had (and if you search in the forums I'm not alone) in the past problems with WiFi due to kernel upgrades.

You can verify if that is your problem by downgrading your kernel and kernel headers. If you regain connectivity ... there is your answer.

Hope this helps.

R.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight. I haven't seen any recent wireless problem that was related to the kernel, so I never thought of that.

Re: Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

Kernel issues mean buggy driver. Do you really have intel 5100 agn card? I have the same on the laptop (iwlagn driver), and can connect to a wpa2 AP. So, I doubt that it's a kernel... There are usually logs in /var/log/{kernel.log,daemon.log} after a connection attempt. Could you show those?

Re: Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

As your kernel log mentions:

wlan0: deauthenticating from xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx by local choice (reason=3)

Re: Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

Sure it's not an AP-problem? I had connectivity problems for two weeks until I found out that switching my router to channel 6 (where all my neighbours are using channel 6, go figure) gives me a perfect quality network.

I also have a broadcom chipset and use broadcom-wl as a driver, but I do background my network connection (with netcfg and net-profiles)

It looks like the problem is either wpa_supplicant (How would I connect to my WPA2 network? I don't really want to downgrade the security) or my kernel, which I can downgrade.

My network is on channel 2. I can try switching to 6, unless I find out it's a kernel problem.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

Channel 2,6?!! Come on, people. Auto-choice of the channel usually works, unless you have very specific objections...

How can this be a kernel issue? Your logs look clean, except that dhcpcd never gets a lease.

I would try disabling WPA on AP and connecting manually with dhcpcd -d. Also, try core/netcfg with the default wpa2-profile (put the dhcp timeout to >100)...

Re: Can't connect using wpa_supplicant [SOLVED]

Okay, looks like I had to both downgrade my kernel AND consolekit in order for wicd to work. I don't think changing the AP channel really affected my setup.

I updated and it looks like the new version of consolekit (4.3.2) works well with the latest stock kernel, so I'm back to normal!

I don't understand, you first say you have to downgrade for it to work, then you upgrade consolekit, and it works?

I had to downgrade both consolekit (4.3.1 -> 4.1.4) and the kernel (37-5 -> 36-x) in order to connect again. Might have been firmware issues. I then could connect, and got an upgrade to consolekit (4.3.2), when I had (4.3.1). I think it fixed things.

So you're basically saying you could have fixed your problem by just upgrading wink. 0.4.3-2 has been built on February 1st. Topic date: February 7th tongue.
