Kernel boot panic

Hello all,

I've used Archlinux for a while now (after having had trouble with Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 10.10 minimal) and I was fairly happy with it, until now. The reason I've given up on Ubuntu is exactly the same problem I'm having now: the system boots into Grub, which in turn loads the kernel, which initializes the hardware and panics.

The panic message I get says something like this:
"Some CPUs didn't anwser in synchronization", along with a few lines about memory banks etc.

By the way, memtest86 reports no problems.

I've found several sites that report the same problem, but with older kernel versions. Some threads even say it should have been solved since 2.35 or something like that. I'm using the most recent kernel version (updated this morning, kernel version 2.6.32.31-1, I think).

The computer (a Dell Vostro 1510 notebook) panics on EVERY startup now (since early this afternoon).
I hold down the power button to turn it off, then I restart the computer. I've done this a dozen of times now...

I really hope someone can help me here...

P.S.: The registration process is somewhat difficult if you can't boot into Linux and wan't to register on this forum... I had to download a live CD, boot it in a virtual machine, and execute the command.

Re: Kernel boot panic

The same problem is described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82065 However, I don't know whether something was fixed in the package, or in the kernel. Either way, you might be able to work around this problem by installing an old kernel from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.

You need to chroot from a live-cd into your existing system to install that

Yeah, I've seen that thread. I have already looked up on how to downgrade my kernel (wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages), but that page only talks about downgrading packages... Your message was quiete clear. Many thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out and report the results.

Okay, I've installed the LTS kernel now (2.6.32.31-1) and so far, so good.
