[SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

I've had KDE for quite some time now, and would like to switch to GNOME for a while, before it's destroyed with GNOME 3.

How can I install GNOME alongside KDE (ie keeping KDE intact)? I tried pacman -S gnome (and gnome-extras and others), but when I pick "GNOME" as a session from the KDM, I only get the wallpaper, and my KDE autostart programs start (yakuake and Skype). No windows, no panels, nothing. Is there a way to make GNOME completely independent from KDE?

EDIT: update in post #11

install Arch with gnome in a separate partition if you want to keep them completely independent

Right, I got GNOME, KDE, XFCE4, OPENBOX on the same machine without any complex configuration (just slim).
No idea why you're having trouble though.

As for completely independent: Make a new installation on a new partition.
By definition a completely independent KDE and GNOME is not possible on the same installation.

Re: [SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

So, basically I should be able to just:

# pacman -S gnome gnome-extra gksu gnome-system-settings

and select "gnome" from session manager?

If so, this didn't work for me. It loads an empty desktop with bunch of errors (something about GTK not visible? Not sure, on a different computer now).

Then you should explain your problem, provide more informations. Saying it didn't work for you won't get you anywhere.

Re: [SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

Well like I said - selecting GNOME from session manager; after logging in, all I see is a wallpaper, and yakuake and Skype are started (because they're in autostart). And that's it.

If that's that, you're on your own. All you're saying is you're having trouble, not much valuable information to work on.

Are you by any chance using gnome-unstable?

Re: [SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

lives2evil, I don't HAVE any other information to give you. There are no errors showing up, the Xorg log looks fine. The only thing that shows is what I said - a wallpaper, and the autostart programs.

And no, I'm not using gnome-unstable

Re: [SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

Then try reinstalling it, remove .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd in your home directory.
just "pacman -S gnome" should do.
and try switching to gdm and see if anything is different.

Also, if trouble persist, when you're logged in. Try Alt+F2, type gnome-panel and click Run.
That's all I can think of for now.

Re: [SOLVED] Install both GNOME and KDE (and problems with .Xauthority)

Just tried it again, no luck. Lives2Evil, Alt+F2 doesn't work.

However, I have discovered something. Even before I installed arch, I couldn't run any X programs as root - I would get this error (running sudo kwrite)

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0

This was easily fixed by running xhost + , so it was a mild annoyance that I had to do every time after X restart, which is not very often.

Now like I said, Yakuake starts with the gnome session. Running gnome-panel or any other gnome app results in this error:

[bogdan@galaxy ~]$ gnome-panel

(gnome-panel:3180): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid (NULL) pointer instance

(gedit:3181): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_window_new: assertion `GDK_IS_WINDOW (parent)' failed
Segmentation fault

Googling around, I found this thread (pay attention to post #4). Obviously there is some sort of correlation there. I tried running xhost + from tty2, alas no luck, it can't open the X server from there.

So I think that if I fix this problem with .Xauthority file that I'll also fix the problem with gnome. Will mess with it now.

EDIT: success! Running

xauth merge ~/.Xauthority

fixed the access host error, and GNOME now runs fine! Thanks all!
