Sound Help!

Hi everyone:

I'm new to arch and don't know what to do with this issue.
After watching a flash for a while, my sound is muted, though everything is normal at the volume control. As soon as the sound is locked, firefox goes not responding. After I force quit, no sound anywhere, not  even in mplayer. When I tried the command "speaker-test -c 2", it says: Write error: -32,Broken pipe. After restart, everything is fine until I watch flash.

I read Advanced Linux Sound Architecture wiki, but can't seem to find anything useful. So I decided to look for assistant here.

Thanks!

What version of firefox/flashplugin are you using, 32/64bit etc?

pacman is still at 3.5. I think you mean Arch linux 2010.05 ??

Also arch comes in either 32 bit or 64 bit. Please give us the output of the following command

uname -a

Re: Sound Help!

No, you misunderstood me, I meant flash is at 10.2 version, my mistake.

Output:

Linux earth 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 25 09:07:57 UTC 2011 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Re: Sound Help!

ok so you do have a 32 bit Arch installation.

Try a flash video ...once it freezes, reboot and then look at the log files and post them here. If they are too long make sure to use pastebin.

Re: Sound Help!

I believe you mean a dmesg?

Here's the output, I don't think it's long:
MOD EDIT - use code tags

Thanks for your help, but can you tell me straightforwardly what you think is the matter?

Re: Sound Help!

Please surround your output with BBCode [code ] tags to make it more readable and not make the thread too long.

that's what we are trying to figure out. Its not like we know everything but we are keeping it from you. As an Arch user you have to be ready and willing to keep working at solving the problems.

Also check your Xorg.0.log to see if there are any errors listed there.

Re: Sound Help!

Firstly, setup about:plugins to hopefully stop flash from bringing down the browser when flash crashes.

Next time, run:
fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
To see what's locking the soundcard.

Re: Sound Help!

Hey, I see what's causing all of this now. I tried the "fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*" before freez and the output is:

                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  user123   1281 F.... mixer_applet2

After sound dye and firefox dysfuction

/dev/snd/controlC0:  clearlight   1281 F.... mixer_applet2
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   clearlight   1405 F...m plugin-containe
/dev/snd/timer:      clearlight   1405 f.... plugin-containe

I thought it should have somthing to do with the plugins, so what's causing this and what should I do?

Thanks, I really want to watch a movie on youtube with sound!

Re: Sound Help!

Kill those processes that are locking the soundcard.

Use something that's reliable to play youtube. Try gnash, or youtube-dl, or cclive.
