Since updating to Gnome3, I've had a host of problems trying to use the chat client empathy
First of all, no matter what settings I attempt to use for the google talk and aim accounts, they always fail with "authentication failure" and "network error" respectively. (oddly a different aim account works just fine).
And even on the accounts that work, no amount of double clicking or right clicking or hitting enter would allow me to message anyone.
I'm completely mystified. Have I done something wrong? Why am I having so much trouble with this when pidgin works fine, albeit without all the nice gnome3 integration?

I've got the same problem with empathy after upgrading to version 3. I don't use aim but I cann't get google talk to work. I have tried different settings with no luck on getting it to work.

Same problem here (with yahoo and gtalk).

For my own, MSN & GTalk accounts work both as usual. The only problem is with Facebook account: it never remember my password... I have to repeat it on each launch of Empathy.

Same here... (gtalk,fb) any xmpp account.. "network error"

talking without logs is cheap talk
like a side note, get the pkgbuild for telepathy-gabble from abs and compile version 0.11.7. The one that is currently in testing is kinda buggy

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Further update: when people try to contact me on the accounts that are supposedly working, they get an error that I'm not logged in
Further *further* update: I attempted to look at the debug stuff in it, and apparently every time it attempts to create a chat window, something else makes a call to destroy it. Odd that.

downgrading to telepathy-gabble 0.11.7 via abs didn't solve the issue.
in the debug log, there is the following warning repeated 4 times:
request_connection_cb: RequestConnection failed: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
the complete log can be found here: http://pastebin.com/92ANmjyA

It's strange but today when I was trying to solve the problem, I changed the global proxy settings to manual and empathy connected with no problem.
the strange thing is that the proxy settings was completely useless and wrong. anyway, when I turned back to "no proxy", empathy was still working with no problem and the problem seems to be solved for now.

I've got the same issue and no luck so far

I'm finding that the login keyring gets unlocked at login like normal, but then locks again shortly after login. Since all my telepathy account passwords are stored in this keyring, if I don't start empathy as soon as I login, then I will have to enter the keyring password for every single telepathy account (aim, yahoo, msn, gtalk, jabber).
I state this because if for some reason I don't get prompted to unlock the keyring then none of my accounts will load and none of the passwords will be remember just as your describing.
Just something to look at.
I haven't figured out how to make my login keyring stay unlocked upon login as yet...

Moved to [testing]
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I'm starting to think, my problem was probably caused by Proxy Switchy, an extension for Chromium. probably its settings conflicts with gnome 3 proxy settings. so it might be its bug.
I'm currently using firefox and I'm not facing any problems with empathy 3 right now.
Things would have been a lot easier if chromium had a built in proxy manager like firefox.

I believe they are the same problem.

I think it could be for this bug reported in Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=609828
I couldn't connect to Facebook and GTalk, always I was getting the error "Network error" or empathy stayed in "connecting". empathy-debugger mission-control throwed this: "request_connection_cb: RequestConnection failed - Did not receive a reply ... name".
I killed telepathy-gabbler and it worked.

I can confirm that tuxitop is correct. I set global proxy to none and its works now. Thanks!
