So, I upgraded to GNOME3 today... and it seems to look somewhat like GNOME2 still...
IT's like half and half.. I do not have "activities" and what not... but I have the applications and places menu like in GNOME2.
I've done some looking around... and it doesn't do this on my buddies systems... but it does do it on both of my Arch Linux machines.
Any suggestions on how to get "Activities" and any other new GNOME3 features?

restart X maybe ?
use a different mirror just to make sure you got all dependencies.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I did forget to mention my other machine was a fresh arch install.. .I have restarted X several times on my main machine..
and I did switch the mirrors... but the dependencies are still the same... but these are my mirrors, if anybody is wondering...

What does it look like on a fresh user's account? Perhaps your old ~/.gnome2 or whatever is messing w/ it?

All right.. I created a user called 'guest' and started up GNOME3 once again.. and it looked the same but it DID give me a message saying it was going into Fallback mode. I didn't get this error on my main user account.
Now, I was reading the Wiki, and I saw that one of the causes for this error is that gnome-shell may not have been installed..
so I made sure it was installed, and matter of fact, I reinstalled it, just to feel more comfortable. Tried it again, same thing.
I'd love to give GNOME3 a shot, but I wasn't expecting it to be this difficult. Lol
Could it be possibly because I'm using xinit and not GDM?
my xinitrc is set to issue 'exec ck-launch-session gnome-session'
The xinit part was just a thought.

The shell needs direct rendering to work. Check it.

I've read that the propietary driver does not have a very good support for the shell.
I'm using nouveau and the shell is smooth, fast and error free. May be you can try it.

My GTS250 didn't like Gnome-shell either

Did you try to open a terminal and executed "gnome-shell --replace" ?

The first round of patches is scheduled for september, seems GNOME3 will be a bit unstable until that.

Good to know I'm not the only one.

Yes, I did try that. Did the same thing.

Okay, thanks. I'll just wait it out until September I guess. I've spent the past few hours setting up a LXDE desktop, and I can live on that for some time, I suppose.

...and just pray that they take even the tiniest scrap of notice regarding bugs that only occur when the nVidia binary blob is in use.

Rather you should be praying that nouveau gets up to scratch sooner rather than later. Nvidia treats linux better than ATI/AMD ever did, but linux customers are still second rate. Fantastic drivers, but ain't never gonna be up to speed with X developments. Nouveau is the future, and the sooner it gets relatively up to par (especially w.r.t power savings) the better for the linux machines of the world.

Yup, fallback mode alright. Both the binary driver and Nouveau work great for me, though I prefer nouveau for now as it has less visual glitches from my experience. Try Nouveau, and if that doesn't work, try using GDM.
