I installed a fresh system this morning with xorg-server 1.10 and then followed with the packages in testing/gnome and testing/gnome-extra.
However, after replacing the xf86-video-ati drivers with the catalyst package (11.3), I notice that everything works OK except now the Gnome 3 Shell panel is coming up as an ugly brown bar and the applets are just squares until I hover over them to reveal the icons. What gives?
According to [http://www.archlinux.org/packages/testi … e-desktop/] Gnome 3 does not require xserver 1.10, but this is somewhat strange to me and I don't know why it happens.

Please start threads in appropriate forums. Gnome3 is still in [testing]
Moving to [testing]
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I upgraded to testing completely to test G3, so you could be right in that it needs xorg-server 1.10
On the other hand, there seem to be some problems with some video drivers or hardware (Catalyst driver is a disaster from what I've heard - nvidia works for most people, nouveau for some, etc.) - the video corruption might be caused by your videocard and/or driver. Can you check your Xorg.0.log, Xsession-errors and check if DRI is working?

I wasn't aware that there was any DRI loaded for the Catalyst driver... I am currently using my other graphics card (intel integrated) and it works great, though I am using it with xorg-server 1.10.
I'll have to look at those logs later in the week when I can install again or make a new partition to test the AMD catalyst on.

I thought you need catalyst-test (prerelease made for ubuntu natty) to work with xorg 1.10?
