Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

Having some trouble...need some help.  First I used lxde and auto mounting worked.  Then I tried gnome3  but it didn’t work for me. So I went to Fluxbox and I was happy with that.  Then I needed to mount my ipod so I went to get a GUI file manager  because I’m a little lazy, and like thumbnails. First I went for thunar, and followed everything on the wiki, but it didn’t work. Then I installed pcmanfm and did everything on the wiki, again no luck.  Mounting drives is new to me, right now I have hal dbus gvfs installed.  I also tried putting  dbus-launch in .xinitrc, fluxbox startup also in slim. I think it could be dbus.  And when I went back to lxde auto mounting is broken there too.

If I type udisks I get this

$ udisks

(udisks:1762): udisks-WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

And as root from a tty I run halt I get D-bus stopping “fail”. I could be wrong about dbus being my auto mounting problem, any thoughts?

How do you start Fluxbox?

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

Hi
I cannot access my external from pcmanfm, although it does recognise it. I searched the forums and wiki and found this thread. I followed the intructions to change the slim.conf by adding this to the login cmd:

ck-launch-session dbus-launch

After a reboot slim produced an error saying:

Falied to execute command

So I then add it to my ~/.xinitrc only to get the same result. I'm not sure but somewhere along this current install I may have missed something.

I come seeking assistance smile Can anyone help?

No, it wasn't, thank you. I installed it and added this to my slim.conf:

login_cmd exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session

For me [SOLVED] Cheers!!

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

could you try running
ck-launch-session dbus-launch pcmanfm
if it couldn't mount, then the problem lies elsewhere.
and please use pcmanfm-git from AUR. Also make sure gamin is install.

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

Okay I tried pcmanfm-git with "ck-launch-session dbus-launch pcmanfm" from a terminal and got this

(pcmanfm:15292): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking IsSupported() failed for remote volume monitor with dbus name org.gtk.Private.GduVolumeMonitor: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor received signal 6

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

What happens if you run "dbus-launch pcmanfm", is it "Unauthorized" or some thing?

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

With "dbus-launch pcmanfm" I get this

GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking IsSupported() failed for remote volume monitor with dbus name org.gtk.Private.GduVolumeMonitor: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor received signal 6

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

So you can not run pcmanfm at all?

PS: Some things I think you should do.
Upgrading your system, remove hal. move "ck-launch-session dbus-launch" to /etc/slim.conf as mentioned above.
Try other apps like thunar if it's any different.
Read the wiki carefully, there's might be something you've missed.
Post more related information, as detail as possible.

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

Both pcmanfm and thunar will run, both do not auto mount. At times I had "thunar --daemon &" in my fluxbox startup, Right now I do not. Also I have tried "dbus-launch thunar", even if i do it from a root terminal it does not auto mount. I have put

"ck-launch-session dbus-launch"

in .xinitrc and been used startx, also the last time I use slim I did it with

"login_cmd           exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session  ck-launch-session  /bin/bash  -login  ~/.xinitrc %session"

and use

"exec startfluxbox"

in my .xinitrc

I tried it again with

login_cmd           exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session /bin/bash  -login  ~/.xinitrc %session

in my slim.conf and still no good.

I also have @dbus in my rc.conf and on reboot it will say "stopping D-bus  [fail]".

and I ran pacman -Syu today.

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

I think you shouldn't background dbus, in case it fails you wouldn't know. (Haven't try background it though, I always leave important daemons untouched)
And "stopping D-bus [fail]" message usually indicate that some thing is wrong with dbus daemon, either it fails while running or it can not start at all.
You could try manually start it.

Not quite. I have everything backgrounded except syslog-ng and I have had no issues.

but given the circumstances, I believe that un-backgrounding it, would atleast tell you whether dbus started correctly or not during boot.

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

I have un-backgrounded it and now both pcmanfm and thunar can see the drive, but if I try to open it I get

"Failed to mount Not Authorized"

so what do I do?

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

Remove "--exit-with-session"  I just got this problem with my brother's laptop and that corrected the problem.  He uses XFCE4 with thunar, but maybe that will correct it.

Re: Auto Mounting & File Managers Problems

My problem was most likely caused by a broken installation.  What I ended up doing was re-installing the whole system, and following the wiki - now it works.  Thanks for the help, appreciate it.
