Can i downgrade nvidia driver?
Offline
I think the new xorg-server is the problem as it isn't supported by this nvidia driver yet.
You could try to install the nouveau driver until nvidia comes with a new version of the 173 branch that supports xorg-server 1.10, see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau for information. As lower-grade options, you might also consider xf86-video-nv and xf86-video-vesa.
Offline
Downgrading is a bit tricky, but you can find more info in the wiki, and there is an aur package called downgrade, that works well.

Maybe here is my issue have discussed. Here it is:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111038
But i don't understand this post
DOH!!.. The problem was that I was loading the nvidia module in my init, so I ran mkinitcpio after reinstalling the newer drivers and it now works! Thanks for trying smile. Coincidentally, I also removed the nvidia module from my mkinitcpio.conf to avoid problems on future upgrades.

Current Xorg server doesn't work with nvidia-173xx and nvidia-96xx. You can use nouveau just fine (if you don't need 3d).
Alternatively you can downgrade xorg-server and related packages and put them into IgnorePkg in pacman.conf to prevent pacman from updating them until the legacy drivers are supported by the latest xorg-server.

I think thats the easy way yes, else you have to blacklist the nvidia kernel module.. check the wiki link of nouveau for details.

Shit. nouveau not working, I added blacklist nvidia to modprobe.conf.

After removing either driver, you need to reboot your computer.

nouveau is working well except flickering for every 1 min and desktop resolution.

Flickering https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23213
Resolution: try 'xrandr --fb widthxheight' e.g.
xrandr --fb 1440x900
or whatever your resolution is.

I've been bitten by this one, too. Why would Arch allow these (xorg & nvidia, it seems) packages together if they're clearly incompatible?

I've been using those packages and get no blinking so they are not incompatible from my point of view.
Arch devs don't have every kind of hardware to test it on, so if it works for them, they put it in the repos.

I have since realized that I had been IgnorePkg'ing nvidia and kernel26 so I wouldn't have to reboot all the time when upgrading. It seems xorg updated to 1.10, but I needed to catch up with the other packages. And reboot.
Totally my bad. Sorry to resurrect the thread for only this.
