i3 no window borders / tile horizontally by default

Is there any way to configure i3 the i3 window borders? they just seem like a waste of space. Also, is there a way to configure it so that it tiles horizontally by default instead of vertically, right now it doesn't make much sense on a wide screen. Thanks

Mod1+ e should give you a 1 px border and it is the default. Or are you saying that you don't want that either?

Also look into these to set border styles

bindsym Mod1+t bn
bindsym Mod1+y bp
bindsym Mod1+u bb
bindsym Mod1+b bt
