Hi,
I have noticed that the arch forums are kind of slow these days compared to a year or two ago. I seldom get replies anymore, other people are kind of experiencing the same I get the feeling.
Is arch slowly dying for some reason?
Is there a new forum out there everyone is moving to like reddit?
Did I miss anything?

Well, as your newest moderator, no it doesn't seem slow at all
It always slows down this time of day. It is almost midnight on the West Coast of North America. The rest of my country has gone to bed, and Western Europe is just staring to wake up. By the morning, I'll be a hundred messages behind.
You do seem to have a run of bad luck on your recent posts, but they are a little bit out of ordinary, easy to answer questions. I am just starting to convert to OpenBox and am using xcompmgr; but, unlike you, I'm using cairo-dock. Works like a charm -- but that doesn't help you.
As to starting Excel under Wine from the OB menu -- Well, speaking for myself, not interested. Sorry.
Edit -- fixed my geography/timezone issues.

Well, one reason could be that a lot of people hang out at the irc channel. It gets you quick response, if you are lucky enough. Then there are some who use the mailing lists.
Also, another thing could be that a lot of general/common questions have already been asked and answered on the forums, so no need to open a new thread. (This would also mean that arch users don't ask trivial question, like found on other forums).

I've noticed it too.
One factor for me was the most recent update to the Arch Linux forum software. The old version made it very easy for me to see new posts and respond to them. The new version does it too, but I just haven't gotten used to it.
Another factor is the forum moderators. Moderators come and go, and each group guides the forums a little differently than the last. Sometimes we end up with threads discussing whether or not 14 is a random number, and sometimes threads like that don't make it past the first post. For the record, in my year and a half of participating in the forums, I have not experienced any "bad" moderators. They're all just different.
Anyway, I still read through the new posts every day. I find less and less to comment about. Maybe I'm just not as chatty as I used to be.

No, Arch isn't dying. Just look at its rank on Distrowatch!

As a linux-user with no talent for math, coding and completely not understanding computing at all, I might add that Arch does have really good wiki's. A lot of the issues I've been looking for have already been answered. No need to open new threads.

The veteran users probably don't visit the forums all that often and the new users like me can't answer most of the questions.

To me, it feels like Europe drives the most activity at the Arch forums. As well, when school is out of session for vacations and such, the activity rises sharply. Weekends, particularly Sunday nights in the US, are almost always slow here.

I think a lot changed when Pierre instated the new, tougher registration system. Most folks that enter now already know how to solve a problem or ask specific questions. The waves of newbs starting threads like "Halp! Arch impregnated my cat!!" have surely faded off. Good for us mods there a still a few that slip through every now and then.

Of course we need to acknowledge the effect of your avatar. I spend much less time in the forums now that I'm compelled to go outside to urinate.

It takes the noobs a little time to get adjusted to pack mentality and to learn the pecking order. Remember, we rehabilitate computers and train people.
