gnome 3 in fallback - missing desktop icons and system menu

after upgrading to gnome 3 i realized that 1. my graphic card 945gm intel on a lenovo laptop is not enough for the new gnome.
i hoped that the fallback mode will work but there are no icons on desktop (in /home/user/Desktop there are all the files and folders)
further the System menu is missing and when i right click on the upper taskbar nothing comes up.

anybody with same issues? how to solve this?

Re: gnome 3 in fallback - missing desktop icons and system menu

thanks to ioni on gnomeirc.

desktop icons: pacman -S gnome-tweak-tool and set the file manager to handle the desktop.
add things to panel: ALT-Right Click

Re: gnome 3 in fallback - missing desktop icons and system menu

I have an Asus EeePC 901 netbook with the same graphics chip, and gnome-shell runs very well without going to fallback mode. I think maybe it isn't installed properly, I recommend you do

pacman -S gnome

and reinstall everything ...

Re: gnome 3 in fallback - missing desktop icons and system menu

@e3k: Have you tried to put nautilus in startup programs in gnome-session-properties?
That fixed the issue of nautilus not rendering the desktop for me, but I still have an issue with launching nautilus now. See this thread.

P.S.: My gnome3 wasn't going to fallback mode at all! gnome-shell was just not starting for some obscure reason, which has been resolved for now.

Re: gnome 3 in fallback - missing desktop icons and system menu

Try pressing alt when clicking on a panel. From there you can add the old gnome-panel items which were in gnome2 to the new panel in fallback mode! Just discovered this today. The system menu seems to be gone completely from fallback mode btw, this isn't a problem with your setup, that's how the menu is now ...

could you please tell me which gfx driver you use? i have x86-video-intel-2.15.0-1 installed.
------
ah ok. for some reason i did not use the upgrade from 2.x guide but the install new gnome3 guide.
after installing gnome-shell i have now gnome3. sorry for trouble.
------
on the other pc i had gnome-shell already. but /etc/mkinitcpio.conf had only the i915 now with i915 intel_agp drm it works after mkinitcpio -p kernel26.
no idea if it was intel_agp or drm. 2 pcs 2 separate mistakes. i should change my job wink
