I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't add my post to this topic (tried about 10 times, always gives bad link).
@wonder: Maybe you'll know more: Is there a way to make nautilus launch again? Your solution does not work for me.
Even when I use the shell to search for nautilus the only thing it gives me is "File Manager" which is not doing anything. Also I can't use gnome-do for folder opening anymore. Which is kinda sad
Also I had to add nautilus to my startup programs, otherwise it won't take care of the desktop and won't startup automatically. A new nautilus file browser will only start if I double-click on a device icon on desktop. Using the shell shortcuts won't work either (also right-click option!)... maybe I messed with my .local/share/applications/ folder too much. Could someone post their File Manager.desktop or something similiar here please? Mine looks... old.

Had to clean it up a little... all nautilus related .desktop files look similiar to the File Manager one. Is that correct this way? Whenever I'm typing nautilus in the gnome-shell search thingy it will only let my choose to open the File Manager... and then nothing happens.
How can that be fixed?

i already explain why it doesn't open. when you click on the icon actually is working and is opening nautilus.
the main feature of gnome-shell is that only one instance of application is running. to open a new instance you middle click or right click new window.
because you set up nautilus to handle your desktop, nautilus is running and when clicking on the icon is raising that session, which in your case, moving to an empty workspace. now you understand why this feature is not enabled by default
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Okay, I understand that now. In my case it is not moving nautilus to an empty workspace, when I open it through double-click on a mount-icon on desktop. It's launching the nautilus filebrowser on the current workspace.
That is really weird behavior in a way :>
Guess I have to get rid of the way gnome-do worked for me and file handling
Got confused, as it is even harder to find out on which workspace you're actually on with a connected external screen (especially if the screen is not part of any workspace then, but the one you're currently on in your main window... so many applications and windows get dragged around without you seeing that)
Thanks for the clarification!

Alrite... this is still unsolved. Thought it was though.
When using gnome-shell I can not start nautilus.
Not using nautilus to do my desktop anymore. It will only start through terminal. Should I get rid of my .local/share/applications/folder?

Deleted contents of the applications folder. Problem solved! Didn't imagine the cleanup to become this big for upgrading to gnome 3

Hey, this worked for me too. I could start nautilus - but i would have to "killall nautilus" then restart it, before it would work properly.
Also, it's not a gnome-shell problem - just gnome3 in general (i don't use gnome-shell).

Thank you, I had a problem using the new gnome shell extension 'places-menu' , removing the entries in the applications folder solved the problem, basically before this fix the extension seemed to do nothing, now it works, thank you .

I just found out a way to solve this. It's posted here -> https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 97#p930497

It's a double post, from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 97#p930497 , but it's also the same question asked twice...
Just use "alacarte" to change "Applications -> Files" from "nautilus %U" to "nautilus /home/yourusername".
This should give you your expected behaviour from nautilus.
