Problem with gdm

Hi and thanks for reading !

i am new to arch linux, although i have used ubuntu for quite some time now. my archlinux system worked until today when i installed the new upgrades. ( there for gnome and xserver was working already.. )

well... after the upgrades i could not start gdm anymore ( i see the cursor but i just see a black screen)

xsession-errors : http://pastie.org/1863953   --> there is an error but i need help on this ....
Xorg.0.log : http://pastie.org/1863961 --> no error at all ... startx works without a problem ....

maybe someone can help !
if you need more information please tell me !

thanks alot !

Re: Problem with gdm

Hello zumtobel,
your xsession error log is very cluttered. Could you please disable everything that is autostarted, temporarily. To do this, go for a tty, log in as root and type

cd /etc/xdg/
mv autostart _autostart
mkdir autostart
cp _autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop autostart/
cd /home/zumtobel.../.config/
mv autostart _autostart
mkdir autostart

This should give you a minimal setup on launch. Login as normal user and verify the changes with startx (which you already reported to work correctly). Next, try to launch with gdm and post the corresponding log files again. Also, you didn't provide the gdm-log yet and i had difficulties spotting a fatal error with an (EE)-prefix in your xorg log.

To revert the autostart changes do:

cd /etc/xdg
rm -r autostart
mv _autostart autostart
cd /home/zumtobel.../.config/
rm -r _autostart
mv _autostart autostart

Re: Problem with gdm

hi wey,
thanks for the help. i have an old laptop and i just need it as an "mp3 player". it seems like my ati card is broken. it just works with vesa driver and since the update.. the system tries to load the free ati driver. i changed back to ubuntu today. i know how to set up everything there so my broken laptop works.
