I'm not sure if this is a problem related to networkmanager or nm-applet, or something completely different I haven't thought about.
When starting nm applet I get the following error messages:
(nm-applet:3480): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_visual_get_red_pixel_details: assertion `GDK_IS_VISUAL (visual)' failed
(nm-applet:3480): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_visual_get_green_pixel_details: assertion `GDK_IS_VISUAL (visual)' failed
(nm-applet:3480): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_visual_get_blue_pixel_details: assertion `GDK_IS_VISUAL (visual)' failed

** (nm-applet:3480): WARNING **: get_all_cb: couldn't retrieve system settings properties: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files.

** (nm-applet:3480): WARNING **: Failed to register as an agent: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

When trying nmcli I also got this error message:
Error: nmcli (0.8.999) and NetworkManager (unknown) versions don't match. Force execution using --nocheck, but the results are unpredictable.
Using --nocheck doesn't help.
I hope some can help me getting this problem solved.

that means networkmanager doesn't run or it crashed.

I was completely sure I would have already checked that.
Sorry!

Try
NetworkManager --no-daemon
as root. Then you see if it crashes.

I'm gonna look into it more closely later today. I could access the network, that's why the idea that NetworkManager could have crashed never came to my mind.

Thats odd, mine is working just fine.
At first I thought it wasnt working, because it wouldnt appear in the Systray in any Desktop Environment or Window Manager, I restarted and suddenly it started working again.
Although if it does stop appearing for any reason in the tray, I end up having to log in and log out.
Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped.
