Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

i'm not sure what mpc (or mpd, you use 2 different names) is.

try these few things first and post the results:
1.  run chromium first, THEN try playing a song.
2.  move to another tty (try ctrl+alt+f2) and see if there is any response.  if so, kill chromium, then move back to tty7 (ctrl+alt+f7).  if everything is still frozen, move back to tty2 and kill the other program.  if that still doesn't work, you apparently have another issue.
3.  are you using pulseaudio?  try using alsa instead
4.  try turning off compositing in kde.  i highly doubt that'll fix anything but its worth a shot.
5.  what does sonata do?  that could also be the culprit.
6.  try chrome instead of chromium.  who knows, it might make a difference

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

Thanks for the reply, but I edited the title. I found out it isn't just mpd in the background, it's trying to launch chromium at all. I've had to move over to firefox for the time being. Whenever I click chromium, or type from terminal, my computer locks up. I'm assuming it has something to do with my nvidia drivers, but I'm not certain.

When this freeze happens, eventually (>2 minutes) I get my mouse back, but my computer is still frozen. I cannot click anything, cannot use keyboard for anything, etc.

ok that does make a bit of difference, now try doing steps 2, 4, 5, and 6 from my previous post and see if that makes a difference.

I cannot move to another TTY when it happens. Also, it looks like it happens every launch now. I disabled mpd and didn't have sonata up. I have yet to suspend KDE compositing

as another solution, try deleting (or moving anyway) the .google-chrome folder in your home directory.  lets see what happens when you get a fresh new setup, maybe you used a bad plugin.

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

Working well so far after uninstalling and removing my .config/chromium folder. Don't know why I didn't think of that! Thank you for all the help, I'll mark this solved unless it begins to break again

Un-solved!

Problem came back pretty recently. It really does look like its compositing that's the problem. so far my work around is to disable compositing, launch chromium, then turn it back on.... Not the most graceful approach though

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

i've noticed recently when i double click a video to launch in vlc, my whole computer locks up for a few seconds.  i'm not sure why this happens or if its related to the same problem you have but i wonder whats going on with these random instabilities with specific programs.  i use kwin compositing as well - i have to use xrender because one day opengl randomly stopped working.  which are you using?  maybe xrender is causing these random freezes.  we might also just have to wait till kde 4.8 is released.

I have no idea which i'm using... Whatever the default is. I also notice that you're using an nvidia card as well, maybe the freezes are related to the nvidia drivers?

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

i was thinking that too.  go check which renderer you are using.  to do this go to systemsettings > desktop effects > advanced > and check "compositor type"

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

I'm using opengl. Also running Arch 64-bit. My card is a GTX 260

It's just weird that chromium is the only program that has problems for me, everything else launches with compositing on fine

Re: [not solved anymore] Launching Chromium in KDE freezes PC

hmmm.... like stated before, i'm forced to use xrender.  so the compositor clearly isn't the issue.  i too am running 64 bit, and vlc is the 1 and only program that freezes.  however, vlc DOESN'T freeze if i open it by itself.  but no matter how i open it, it takes forever to load and it used to be pretty fast.

i think we're just going to have to wait for some updates, i'm not really sure whats going on.  considering that only kwin compositing is causing this issue, for you anyway, you should check back at the kde forums (http://forum.kde.org/) for help.  if you find anything, report back here.
