[SOLVED] Wireless network stopped working after updating to gnome3

My wireless network stopped working after installing gnome3. I use networkmanager to connect to network. Dbus and networkmanager daemons seems to start ok but wlan device has disappeared.

$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr...

lo Link encap:Local Loopback...

There should be also wlan0 but as you can see there ain't. Wired connection works just fine. Can you help me to solve my problem?

My laptop is Asus Eee 904HA.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless network stopped working after updating to gnome3

Still unresolved. No one has a clue?

I've figured that Networkmanager does not create this problem. I removed it but still I couldn't get it work. Then I found something from /var/log/daemon.log

Quote from /var/log/daemon.log:

May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: keyfile: parsing Auto SSID ...
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: keyfile: read connection 'Auto SSID'
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> trying to start the modem manager...
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> monitoring kernel firmware directory '/lib/firmware'.
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> found WiFi radio killswitch rfkill0 (at /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/rfkill/rfkill0) (driver eeepc)
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> WiFi disabled by radio killswitch; disabled by state file
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> WWAN enabled by radio killswitch; enabled by state file
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> WiMAX enabled by radio killswitch; enabled by state file
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> Networking is enabled by state file
May 29 19:21:46 arch NetworkManager[1610]: <info> (eth0): carrier is OFF

So first it finds the SSID but then it dies by killswitch. The only killswitch on this computer is Fn+F2 buttons but when I press them kernel (or something) crashes and I have to reboot the computer from power button. Sounds like a bug?

It looks like you have switched off your wlan card. I mean via special netbook button. In logs you can see that your "carrier is off" or "wifi disabled by radio killswitch". Find such button and try to switch it on.

What do you see when you run 'ifconfig -a'? There is no wlan0?
If you see it, please run 'ifconfig wlan0 up' and then see if it goes up. If the wlan0 is still disabled by laptop button, you should get info about rfkill switch.

Like I said there is no button except the keyboard combination Fn+F2 which crashes the system.

Correct.

[cocktus@arch ~]$ rfkill list
0: eeepc-wlan: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: no

If I unblock it with command rflist unblock 0 wireless network appears to nm-applet but when I try to put it on it says "unavailable". If I turn it off it gets blocked again.

Have you tried unblocking wlan0 and than connect manually via console? Maybe you have to run ifconfig wlan0 up after unblocking.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless network stopped working after updating to gnome3

Hmm.. That partially did the trick. After unblocking device 0: eeepc-wlan: Wireless LAN I tried to get wlan0 up. At first I thought that it did not help but when I checked rfkill list there has appeared another device 2: phy1: Wireless LAN. After unblocking that I got wireless network working again.

I have no clue why it worked that way but I'm glad it did big_smile Thanks riddle! Let's cross our fingers that rebooting the system won't bring the problem back.

EDIT: Still working after reboot. Wohoo, I'm not 'Freak on a Leash' anymore big_smile
