Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

Hello,

My Arch Install with Nvidia drivers and KDE is running hot. 60 C when idling. openSuse with Nvidia drivers and KDE runs ~40 C when idling.
I have installed laptop-mode-tools, cpufreq with ondemand and powersaver governors.
My fan is constantly running and never gets a break, even if I don't start X.
The guts of the laptop are dust-free.

Any suggestions to cool things down? Or files to compare between openSuse and Arch to figure out why it's cooler?

Same problem here. HD temp about 55 C and GPU never drops below 53 C

Run powertop, and look at what it says.

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

now it is cooler but I got problem with sound- when I'm plugging in headphones sound's comming both from speakers and headphones(I have lenovo G560 laptop and I already did what was mentioned in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=103470 and it didn't helped. also synaptics touchpad stoped working properly- I can tap and move cursor but cannot scroll. also multitouch is not working. modprobe synaptics returns that module's not found

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

When you say "now it's cooler" what did you do? lts? and how much cooler?
brebs, powertop just throws USB suspend and the like, nothing that drastically changed anything temperature wise (the temps fluctuated from 60 to 59 and back but I don't believe powertop had anything to do with it)

Cosmin, any particular reason you think the lts kernel will cool things down?

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

powertop shows whether you're suffering from the hugely-publicized power-usage regression. Kernel 2.6.34 is less power-hungry.

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

(Maybe not directly contributing to OP, but perhaps useful for future searchers).

I have (almost) the same laptop; Sony Vaio F12 with a fresh, vanilla Arch install. Switching from nouveau to nvidia lowered my idle temperature from 52C to 44C.

(Still, there are quite a few annoyances with this laptop; mousepad working so-so and only after adding i8042.nopnp=1 as a kernel parameter, backlights not working, and too much fan noise. I'd advice anyone to keep looking, especially if they look for a laptop to run Linux on.)

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

This may also be related to the "powermizer" issue, where powermizer reports incorrect temperatures. I would suggest doing the following, which I myself have to do:

Create the following file:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

and place in it:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"
        Option "NoLogo" "1"
EndSection

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

manzdagratiano, thanks for the X options, the GPU temperature went from fluctuating at 51C to 48C and the sensors output went from 60C to 56C-57C.
That is still not as cool as my openSuse install, and is a lot hotter than Windows.

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

The most recent lts kernel I have .32, and a download of a new one is unfeasible, do you think the .32 is too outof date?

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

I am just recommending the use of kernel 2.6.32: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50

kernel 2.6.32 uses less energy than the latest kernel

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

I'm trying: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 39#p943739

My laptop runs cooler running Arch using a rawdisk image in VirtualBox (with composting) inside of Windows than a non-composting native boot.

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

Running 2.6.32 makes a non-X environment run at 48 C which is what Windows idles at with Aero. KDE X runs at about 55 C using the powersave cpufreq governor. So temperatures dropped ever so slightly. Windows only hits 55 C if I'm running Age of Empires on LAN or doing a major Java compile.
Any other tweaks?

So we're talking about Arch running under VM?

I dunno why but my notebook is also very hot when running default kernel26- HD temp around 55C and GPU  53C. LTS kernel makes it slightly cooler: HD 48C and GPU 47C. It's hard to say why is this happening

Re: Arch Linux hotter than other Distros

Ah, sorry for the murkiness, all of my temps now will be in a full native install not the VM.
What's your processor? A friend of mine is starting to think that all Intel i-series are having temp problems.

Same here, that's why I want to an older kernel. I hopped on the #suse channel and all of the power saving/cooling tweaks the guys knew of I had installed in arch.

60 C on the LTS kernel with a game of KBlocks open is ridiculous. GPU reaches 53 C.
