My questions is pretty simple: how can I restart my GPU without a reboot? More generally what's the best way to restart init on a laptop without a reboot? And where is the /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state log I need to look at?
I have init 5 as default, and if I # init 3 it hangs and I've got to do a hard power down. Pretty noob on my part.
Here's the actual issue:
I have the .39 vanilla kernel, on an intel centrino machine, 4gb ram shared with the GPU, which is Intel Mobile 4/i915, with the 64-bit distro.
My GPU is hanging. Sometimes KDE freezes, sometimes I just lose compositing. When it does I drop into another terminal prompt, do a #killall X, and get back to the KDM screen. Everything works (including composting), but graphics-intensive stuff pulls from the CPU a lot more and video is choppy. I also have to reenter my hdparm settings manually, which I have scripted to start on exiting suspend and during init.
I'm having a similar problem to what's in these threads:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101497

The biggest problem seems to be when I'm switching from Oolite (I'm embarrassed) to an actual application. I haven't tested it but I think switching from Oolite to GTK apps is the most likely cause.
Here is my dmesg output (had to enter by hand from a tethered Mac, apologies for typos)
[whatever] [drm:i915 hangcheck elapsed]*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[whatever + x MS] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
[+x MS][drm:i915_wait_request]*ERROR* i915_wait_request returns -11 (awaiting 694583 at 694580, next 694584)
[+x MS][drm:i915_reset]*ERROR* Failed to reset chip.
